In this thoughtful article, Australia's Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Aftab Malik, reminds us of a simple but powerful principle: before judging one another, we should seek to understand one another.

The first word revealed in the Holy Qur'an was "Read". Knowledge, dialogue, and genuine human connection remain some of the most effective ways to overcome fear, stereotypes, and misunderstanding.

At ISSA, we believe that Australians of all backgrounds are stronger when we engage with facts rather than assumptions, with people rather than stereotypes, and with respect rather than division.

We encourage everyone to learn more, ask questions, visit a mosque, meet your Muslim neighbours, and experience firsthand the diversity and contributions of Muslim Australians.

Social cohesion is not built through fear. It is built through understanding, mutual respect, and shared humanity.

Her latest remarks drew on Ed Husain’s memoir The Islamist. Reading more may help reframe the debate on Islam, writes Australia’s special envoy to combat Islamophobia

🌙 1448 AH

The beginning of Muharram marks the start of a new Islamic year and an opportunity to renew our intentions, strengthen our connection with Allah, and strive for what is pleasing to Him.

May Allah grant the Ummah guidance, unity, and barakah in the year ahead.

Congratulations to the Socceroos on their outstanding 2–0 victory over Turkiya in the FIFA World Cup.

Today, the goals came from Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda, two Australians with different journeys, united by one purpose and one flag.

One was born and raised in Australia. The other arrived as a refugee and was given the opportunity to build a future here. Together, they helped Australia achieve success on the world stage.

This is the Australia we believe in and love: a nation where people from different backgrounds work together, contribute together, and succeed together.

Australia is at its best when talent, hard work, respect, and opportunity bring people together for the betterment of our country.

Well done to the entire Socceroos team. You have made Australia proud and reminded us that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths.

🇦🇺⚽ Congratulations Socceroos! ⚽🇦🇺

What really happens behind closed doors when no one is watching? Some relationships look fine on the outside, but the reality at home can be very different.

As community leaders, Imams, teachers, youth workers, neighbours etc we all play a role in creating safer homes.

This session opens an important conversation about the signs of DFSV, how it shows up in our community, and how we can support and refer people safely and appropriately.
.....because every home deserves safety and dignity 🌹

ISSA Announces Major Milestone for Al Salam Community Centre Expansion - Marion ( AlhamduLILLAH)

The Islamic Society of South Australia (ISSA) is pleased to announce that it has secured a $2 million grant from the South Australian Government to support the expansion of the Al Salam Community Centre at Marion.

This contribution represents approximately 50% of the total project cost, with the remaining 50% to be funded through the generosity and support of our community. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening community infrastructure and creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds to connect, learn, and thrive.

The Al Salam Community Centre has served the South Australian community for many years as a place of worship, education, community engagement, and social support. With our community continuing to grow, the expansion project will enable the centre to better meet current and future needs, inshALLAH.

Once completed, the new development will double the capacity of the existing centre, creating significantly more space for educational programs, community events, youth activities, women's programs, wellbeing initiatives, and multicultural engagement.

The expansion will provide:

• Increased opportunities for women and young people to participate, connect, and lead.
• Additional spaces for educational, social, and community activities.
• Enhanced facilities to support families and community organisations.
• Greater capacity to serve the wider South Australian community and strengthen social cohesion.

ISSA extends its sincere gratitude to the South Australian Government, particularly Minister for Multicultural Affairs Nadia Clancy MP and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, for their support and confidence in this vision. We would also like to thank our local MPs, Sarah Andrews MP and Priest , for their ongoing support and commitment to our community.

ISSA also thanks its members, volunteers, donors, staff, Imams, and the broader community whose ongoing support has made this achievement possible.

As custodians of this investment, ISSA is committed to delivering this project with transparency, accountability, and excellence, ensuring that Al Salam Community Centre continues to serve as a welcoming and inclusive community hub for generations to come.

“Together, we are building a stronger, more connected, and more inclusive South Australia.”
