Early this morning, some of the team from UnitingCare SA and the SA Synod office (including special guest Biscuit!) joined 3,000+ people in Victoria Park to “Walk a Mile in My Boots”.

This fundraising campaign supports the amazing work of Hutt St Centre, which provides essential health and wellbeing support to those experiencing homelessness.

In Australia, it’s estimated that a person sleeping rough walks around 28 km (17.8 miles) each week just to reach essential services and find safety for the night.

During Loneliness Awareness Week, we’ve been thinking about how we make room for connection.

Some of our most powerful tools for building relationships are local community groups, whether they be churches, sporting clubs, volunteer organisations, or other groups.

As community members, we can promote connection in various ways:
🔹 Host a drop-in event built around a shared interest
🔹 Create a welcoming arrival experience at your community group, with warm faces and clear signage
🔹 Run a ‘bring someone new’ campaign with your group
🔹 Activate public spaces with free, low-barrier events
🔹 Create a local noticeboard (physical or online).

This week is Loneliness Awareness Week in Australia.

We spend a significant portion of our time at our workplaces, so it’s important that these are spaces for connection.

As coworkers, there are ways we can help each other connect:
🔸 Host a regular team lunch or after work activity
🔸 Create spaces for informal interaction, such as a communal kitchen
🔸 Set up online group chats around interests that staff can join
🔸 Start meetings with a moment to share (make sure it’s optional)
🔸 Create a welcome experience for new starters, such as buddies.

Did you know that 1 in 2 people living in Australia experience some form of social disconnection?

Today is the start of Loneliness Awareness Week. This year’s theme is ‘Make Room for Connection’.

As individuals, there are simple steps we can take to make room:
🔹 Sit next to someone new
🔹 Wave and stop to chat to those around you
🔹 Invite someone new into something you already do
🔹 Eat with others
🔹 Try a new activity or start an interest group
🔹 Comment or DM instead of simply ‘liking’ someone’s social media post
🔹 Volunteer with a local organisation.

The Food Relief Centre at Lefevre Uniting Church Taperoo is 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀.

This week is 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 – a time to recognise the vital work of volunteers across Australia. The theme for 2026 is ‘Your Year to Volunteer’ – could it be yours?

Every Tuesday, Taperoo averages 60 people coming through their doors in need of food relief. Between 150 and 180 meals are sent into the community each week.

If you can help, please contact Maria at [email protected] to register your interest.

9 News reported on the growing need for food relief programs across our state. This clip features Lesley Larecki from the Grove Uniting Church Food Relief centre.

We're raising money for our relief centres during Pancake Day season, which runs until the end of June. If your church, school or community group would like to help support these vital programs, there's still time to host your own fundraising event.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀? 📈

As the federal government prepares to deliver its 2026–2027 Budget in May, UnitingCare Australia is advocating for a vision of productivity that puts people at the centre.

Economic efficiency is not an end, but a means to achieving stronger communities and improved wellbeing for all.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲: 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲–𝟮𝟳 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 is a document prepared by the national body for the Uniting Church’s community services network. It sets out costed, evidence-based proposals that prioritise equity of access to support, early intervention measures, and future-focused structural reform.

Crucially, “social infrastructure is economic infrastructure”.
