With our Thrive Tonsley apartments now fully allocated, we're beginning to meet the incredible people who are making this community home. One of those residents is Catherine, whose move to Tonsley has brought her closer to family, connection and a renewed sense of belonging.

After years of challenges, including rebuilding her life as a single parent and later facing isolation when her son moved away, Catherine had started to believe loneliness was simply part of life. The thought of being distanced from family and community felt impossible to overcome.

Everything changed when a conversation with her Junction housing manager led to an opportunity to move to Thrive Tonsley.

Today, Catherine is living closer to her son, building new friendships and enjoying the sense of connection that comes from being part of a welcoming community.

"Tonsley is less than 10 minutes from my son, so I expressed my interest and was lucky enough to be able transfer to a new apartment," she said. "It’s just so beautiful here."

So pleased and proud to officially unveil our new housing and community hub at Tonsley as we continue to evolve to support more South Australians to thrive.

Announced today via The Advertiser, Thrive Tonsley brings together 50 studio, one and two-bedroom social homes across eight levels, alongside a café, community spaces, and a new head office for our growing team of around 400 staff.

The development is supported by $15.2 million investment as part of the Social Housing Accelerator Program, a Federal Government initiative delivered in partnership with the State Government and community housing providers.

A second stage is also now well underway. The adjacent $35.3m million build-to-rent development will comprise 63 affordable apartments and is underpinned by a $25.6 million boost from the Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF).

Coffee, a chat, and a journey across the Fleurieu were at the heart of a recent Human Services SA Community Connections Program road trip during Loneliness Awareness Week.

Led by Skylight Mental Health and Junction, the initiative brought together councils, schools, rotary clubs and community groups, with mobile coffee van The Brew Box visiting eight Fleurieu locations, including Rapid Bay, Milang, Currency Creek, Parawa and Cape Jervis, to offer free coffee and information about the program.

More than coffee, it was about connection. By reaching people experiencing loneliness, as well as those who could support them, the initiative helped strengthen community ties, one coffee (of about 60 daily) at a time.

A big thank you to all involved.

If you, or someone you know, would benefit from connecting with community in the Fleurieu, local services, or strengthening their social connections, contact Junction on (08) 8392 3070 (Fleurieu) or (08) 8553 2809 (Kangaroo Island).

For most of her life, Lynn was the person building stability for others. After spending years creating a home for her family, she never expected she would one day experience homelessness herself.

"Homelessness can happen to anyone in this climate. You think it would never happen to you," Lynn said.

Today, Lynn, her greyhound Ziggy and cat Charlie have a place to call home and the stability to look towards the future with hope.

Congratulations to 13-year-old Zac Fogden, one of 12 students recognised for their outstanding contribution as part of the Student Volunteer Army (SVA) Service Award, a Volunteering SA&NT initiative funded by the State Government and delivered on KI with support from Our Town - Kangaroo Island and Junction.

Zac, an avid basketballer, cricketer and footballer, volunteers at the Western Districts Sports Club and received the 2025 Jack Walsh Memorial Trophy for service. He has also participated in the Charter Ambassador Program, Middle Years Leadership Group and Student Networks.

“I think all people should volunteer in their community because it is an important way to keep the community going,” Zac said.

The SVA Service Award encourages volunteering among young people helping them build skills, gain experience and forge community connections through local organisations and projects while providing a formal record of their service.

Since launching in July 2023, the program has seen 2,183 secondary students record almost 40,000 hours of volunteering across South Australia.

Well done to Zac (pictured here with his award), all SVA Service Award participants, and the individuals and organisations who support them.

Just two days before he died, Nita married her beloved soulmate, Jeff, in a small ceremony at Victor Harbor Hospital.

After 30 years together, they finally became husband and wife.

For Nita, who lost her mother at six, endured abuse growing up and ran away from home at 18, Jeff had been her constant for three decades. When he succumbed to cancer, she was left grieving and facing the very real prospect of homelessness.

A referral to Junction proved a "sliding doors moment", helping Nita secure a rental home in Goolwa and connect with Community Connections, a program delivered by Junction and Skylight Mental Health, funded by Human Services SA, to help people build lasting social connections.

Before he died, Jeff left Nita with one final piece of advice: he didn't want her to "drop her bundle".

Today, with support from Jeff's relatives and a growing circle of community connections, Nita is rebuilding a life she once thought had ended.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, Nita's story is a reminder that connection can make all the difference when rebuilding after loss.

NAIDOC Week may be over, but the celebrations continue to grow each year.

A big thank you to everyone who helped bring this year's events to life, whether you organised, attended or took part. Your support helps keep these important celebrations strong across our communities.

Some highlights from this year's celebrations included:

- Our annual NAIDOC Community Celebration, where around 200 people joined us for a day of celebration, market stalls, music and dance. This year's event was particularly special, with the official launch of Junction's Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and Ally Statement.

- A NAIDOC celebration on Kangaroo Island, delivered in partnership with local community partners. The event welcomed 56 community members and focused on culture, connection, safety and education, with activities including shell and gum-leaf painting, storytelling, music, badge-making and the creation of a community artwork.

- The Pultongg Family Fun Day in Victor Harbor last Friday, where our team was proud to be a stallholder at one of the region's major NAIDOC celebrations. The day featured a Smoking Ceremony, cultural dance performances, live music, the Nunga Youth Choir, a community BBQ and family-friendly cultural activities, bringing people together to celebrate and connect.

We look forward to doing it all again next year!

After being encouraged by the Junction team to enter the Community Housing Art Awards (CHARTS) in 2023, local artist and Junction resident Luke began putting his artwork out into the world and connecting with new audiences.

"The support and encouragement I received from Junction gave me the confidence to enter CHARTS and start putting my artwork out there. Since then, new opportunities have come along and it makes me so proud to see people connecting with my work," said Luke.

One such opportunity recently arose through Junction's partnership with Conscious Investment Management (CIM) who, after seeing his work, purchased one of Luke’s pieces to feature on the front cover of their annual impact report.

Luke is pictured here with CIM representative Laurie and his artwork, 'Eden City Limits'.

Great work, Luke - and thank you to CIM for their continued support of Junction and the people we work alongside every day.
