Taking a show on the road can be a challenging exercise in the best of circumstances.

Right now, it’s even more precarious.

Surging fuel prices have had an immediate and serious impact on live performance touring around Australia and overseas.

Already tight budgets are being eaten up by higher fuel and freight costs.

Audiences are under even more cost-of-living pressure and are cutting back on ticket buying.

Producers large and small are seriously considering whether it remains feasible for them to take their shows on tour in the current environment.

Shows that are postponed or cancelled mean fewer employment opportunities for performers and production and tech crews.

Venues lose revenue through cancelled bookings. Local economies miss out on the additional spending that live performance generates, including hospitality and tourism.

LPA has written to all of our federal, state and territory arts and cultural ministers calling for targeted assistance to support the live performance industry during this challenging period.

Opera has been pronounced dead so often it should qualify for frequent-flyer points to the underworld. And yet the co**se keeps selling tickets, writes Alex Budd.

The Creative Workplaces Survey is an opportunity to share your experiences and help create the first national picture of what it’s really like to work in Australia’s creative industries.

Opera Australia is the nation’s premier opera company and one of our most important cultural institutions.

It is also our largest performing arts employer.

In 2024, Opera Australia supported a workforce of almost 1,300 people. More than 53 per cent were artists and musicians, with more than 30 per cent technical and production employees.

The company employs singers, conductors, orchestral musicians, coaches and repetiteurs, and highly skilled teams working in scenic construction and painting, lighting, design, direction, wardrobe, wig-making, management and administration.

Live Performance Australia is calling for the introduction of a production incentive to help attract more investment and offset the costs of developing and staging new productions by Australia's world-class performing arts companies.

Opera Australia acting Chief Executive Simon Militano explains the difference such a production incentive would make for our artists, creative workers and audiences.
