The Melbourne Food Rescue Network is LIVE!
Yesterday morning we were thrilled to join Lord Mayor Nick Reece the Hon. Luba Grigorovitch MP, and our program partners including Queen Victoria Market (QVM), City of Melbourne and STREAT to launch this important initiative.
Through the Melbourne Food Rescue Network, SecondBite will move rescued produce from the market to frontline food relief partners, making sure fresh, nutritious food reaches people who need it most.
It’s a practical response to two challenges we see every day: too much good food going to waste, while too many people are struggling to afford the food they need.
In its pilot month, the program is already having impact. So far, we’ve collected 1 tonne of food donated by QVM traders and redistributed it to local charity partners, providing much-needed food relief to Melburnians.
With thanks to the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne for funding this initiative, we look forward to bringing this network to life and delivering a practical, local response to food surplus and food insecurity.
