What Is Sin—Something We Inherit or Something We Choose?

If human beings are born with a fallen nature, what right does God have to judge us?

This is an important question. Did God create us as sinners? Does He condemn us simply because we were born into a fallen world? Or does God judge us according to the choices we personally make?

To answer these questions, we must first understand what sin is.

A small book titled Life of Victory makes this important observation:

“We can never appreciate the wonders of atoning grace unless we understand the awful ravages of the evil which made the atonement necessary.”

What made the atonement necessary?

The answer is sin.

Unless we understand the seriousness of sin, we cannot fully appreciate God’s grace. We will not understand what Jesus experienced to rescue us and give us eternal life.

Today, therefore, we will consider an important question:

Is sin something we possess simply because we were born, or does sin involve our personal choices and actions?

Main Text: “For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you” (2 Corinthians 2:4, NKJV).

Introduction
--------------
The apostle Paul didn’t always have it so easy. Besides jail and the life-threatening situations he faced, Paul also wrote: “From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches” (2 Cor. 11:24–28, NKJV).

What we see in his letters to the Corinthians is some of the “deep concern” that Paul had for this church. Yet, amid it all, his love for them never failed, just as Christ’s love for us never fails us. In fact, it was from Jesus that Paul learned to love the churches in a way that reflects the love that Jesus has for us (2 Cor. 5:14; see 1 Cor. 11:1).

2 Chronicles 33 — exploring sin, consequences, repentance, and the responsibility of fathers and leaders.

"The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention. So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon." - 2 Chronicles 33:10–11

Key Lessons:

1. Dont Delay - Procrastination on Christ is Satan's greatest weapon. Repent now — not after the Week of Prayer, not at New Year.
2. Seek God First - "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God." — Matthew 6:33. Let the church begin with God, not programs.
3. Sin has consequences - Forgiveness doesn't always erase the consequences of our actions." David was forgiven — but still bore the fruit of his sin with Uriah's wife (1 Kings 15:5).
4. Anyone can change - Even Manasseh — the wickedest king — repented and was restored. No one is beyond God's grace.
