The church doesn’t have an abuse problem because it cares too much.
It has an abuse problem because it doesn’t understand power.

For decades, we were taught to prioritize reputation over reality. Unity over safety. Forgiveness over accountability. And when you don’t understand power, abuse, or trauma, you will mislabel harm as conflict. You will platform charisma over character. You will call victims “divisive” while protecting the system that hurt them.

Most churches are not trying to enable abuse. They are simply untrained in how power actually works.

But ignorance is not neutral. It costs people their faith. Their safety. Sometimes their lives.

If the church wants to be a refuge, we have to get educated about power, coercion, grooming, and trauma. That is not liberal. That is not anti-church. That is discipleship.

Understanding changes everything.

In the Nicene Creed, we declare our faith in the Church, describing Her as Apostolic. By this we denote the Church which descends from the Apostles who were gathered in the Upper Room at Pentecost. We also proclaim the mission of the Church in this world as being apostolic, which means that She is called to evangelize the whole world, bringing to all nations the Salvific Word and True Faith. This Faith has been loyally preserved by our Antiochian Church. By the Grace of God, this Church has abided in this Faith, being united with the Mother Church and through Her with all the Antiochian Archdioceses spreading abroad.
