Project Independence

Project Independence Enabling independence for people with intellectual disabilities through secure, affordable housing.

Project Independence is an innovative housing solution for people with an intellectual disability. We prepare and empower people to achieve truly independent living within PI and in the broader community. We provide a pathway to home ownership, allowing residents to gradually build equity in a property, using their Disability Support Pension. Since its inception in 2014 Project Independence has built 30 homes, with new developments underway in capital cities across Australia.

A great day of learning, connection and conversation at the Amplify Alliance National NFP Summit 2026 in Canberra. đź’š

From funding and collaboration to creating meaningful impact, there was plenty to reflect on and bring back to our work at Project Independence.

It was also wonderful to be part of the launch of National Not-for-Profit Day, celebrating the incredible contribution of Australia’s NFP sector and the people behind the work.

A highlight was hearing from Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, alongside so many inspiring voices from across the sector.

Thank you to Amplify Alliance Australia, A/Prof Rick Macourt, Violet Roumeliotis AM, Ben Vasiliou, Maria Dimopoulos AM and Carmel Crouch AM for sharing your insights and perspectives.

We were pleased to have Rebecca Vassarotti MLA, Member for Kurrajong and former Minister for Housing, and Laura Nuttall MLA, Member for Brindabella and the member of the ACT Legislative Assembly, visit one of our residences.

Our resident Campbell showed them around and shared his experience of living at Project Independence, providing an opportunity to see firsthand how our homeownership model supports greater independence, choice and security for people with intellectual disability.

Thank you, Rebecca and Laura, ACT Greens for your support and advocacy for inclusive housing, and for taking the time to visit, listen and understand why having a home of your own can make such a meaningful difference.

We were honoured to present at the Parliamentary Friends of Housing hearing this week to share the amazing work Project Independence is doing and the gap we are trying to fill.

We spoke with representatives from the Australian government about our innovative housing model and sincerely thank them for taking the time to attend. The session also heard our residents Peter and Liam speak about their experiences at Project Independence.

A sincere thank you to Senator David Pocock for the invitation and opportunity to share our work.

Every day in our homes, residents are building the skills and confidence that support greater independence.

From preparing meals in their own kitchen and helping with household routines to pursuing hobbies, volunteering, and connecting with their community, every achievement is a step forward.

These moments may seem small, but they build confidence, choice, and a greater sense of independence over time.

Your donation helps us provide safe, supported homes where residents can continue to learn, grow, and thrive.

đź’™ Help build confidence for life.
