Today is War Widows Day.

Some war widows and widowers lost their partner in service, and others years after it. All of them have carried the cost of service at home.

For more than 100 years, Legacy has stood beside them.

To every war widow and widower, we recognise what you have given, and we thank you.

A huge thank you to Omni for competing in the Majura Military Megarace 2026.

Not only did team Omni have the highest individual fundraiser, they also took out the team prize raising $3847 for Canberra Legacy!

It was great to see your team stepping up for a challenge that tests fitness, teamwork and resilience. Your fundraising and support helps Canberra Legacy look after veterans' families.

What a wonderful day we had at the Government House Open Day!

Our team enjoyed spending the day sharing the story and work of Canberra Legacy with visiting families, government representatives, business leaders and members of the community. It was a fantastic opportunity to talk about the support Legacy provides to veterans' families and connect with so many people who stopped by our stall.

There were plenty of smiles, photos and high-fives with the ever-popular Trooper Bear, who was a big hit with visitors of all ages! It was lovely to meet so many people, answer questions and hear stories from those already connected with Legacy and those learning about our work for the first time.

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to stop by, have a chat and support Canberra Legacy. Events like this help us raise awareness of the work we do and connect with the community we proudly serve. 🧸💙

This week is National Carers Week (11–17 October), and we want to acknowledge a role that often goes unseen.

For many of the partners in our care, service didn't end when their veteran loved one came home. Some have spent years, even decades, caring for a partner living with the physical or invisible wounds of what they went through. It's a role few chose, and one that rarely comes with recognition.

This year's theme is Care for a Carer, and that's exactly what Legacy tries to do. Our Legatees and Community Service Workers walk alongside these families for the long haul, through home visits, advocacy and just being there, so that no carer has to manage alone.

To every carer in our Legacy family: we see you, and we're here for you too. 💙

Today, 11 October 2026, marks 25 years since the establishment of Operation Slipper, the start of Australian Defence Force's contribution to military operations in Afghanistan. It became Australia's longest-running conflict.

Over the two decades that followed, more than 35,000 Australians served in Afghanistan or in support roles across the Middle East. More than 40 Australian Defence Force personnel lost their lives as a result of their service, and over 200 were wounded. Many others carry invisible wounds that have stayed with them today.

Behind every one of those Australians was a family who waited for them, and for those who returned, a family that continues to support them through the lasting impacts of their service.

This is where Legacy stands. We support the partners and children of Afghanistan veterans, whether that's counselling, case management, financial assistance or simply someone who understands what this service has cost a family. Twenty-five years on, that support hasn't stopped, and neither have we.

To every Afghanistan veteran, and every family who stood behind them: thank you, and we remember.

Today is World Mental Health Day and October is Mental Health Month. This year's theme, Together We Thrive, is a reminder that connection is one of the most powerful things we have for our mental health, especially when life feels overwhelming.

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de brought something into the open that Legacy has always understood: the impact of service doesn't stop with the veteran. When a partner comes home carrying the weight of their service, which may include PTSD and other mental health conditions, their family carries it too.

That's why Legacy widened our eligibility this year, so more partners and children of veterans can turn to us for help and be given the support they need to thrive.

Whether it's counselling, case management or simply someone who understands what service can cost a family, connection is at the heart of what we do.

Thank you, Canberra! M3 2026 - what a day🏅

Today the Majura Military Megarace returned to Majura Range, and together we raised over $30,000 to support Canberra Legacy and the families of veterans.2

15 corporate teams took on the 6km course of obstacles, bush trails and military challenges. They climbed, carried, crawled, got wet and muddy, and backed each other the whole way. M3 is built for teams, not superheroes, and you proved it.

🔹 The Australian Defence Force, our Army PTIs, and the ADFA cadets, for lending their expertise, energy and time on an active military range

We are releasing a commemorative coin to mark the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan (2001–2021) and to honour those who served.

The coin will be available at the national commemorative service, to be held at the Australian War Memorial on 11 October 2026. This service will formally recognise the service and sacrifice of all those who served in the Afghanistan War (2001–2014) and conflicts in Afghanistan (2015 to present), as well as the families of veterans.

For veterans and families who cannot attend the commemorative service in person, coins will also be available following the event. Register for delivery or collect the coin at one of the locations listed on DVA's website.
