Plenary Address by Distinguished Professor Yin Paradies and Melissa Browning

The 2026 IAHA National Conference will create space for the conversations and actions needed to strengthen cultural safety and eliminate racism.

Distinguished Professor Yin Paradies is a Wakaya man and Chair in Race Relations at Deakin University. His research spans racism, anti-racism, cultural safety, Indigenous knowledges and decolonisation.

Melissa Browning is a proud Cudjingburra-Bundjalung, Kullilli and Kombumerri woman with more than 22 years of experience across public health, policy development, cultural safety and anti-racism education.

Together, their expertise will challenge us to move beyond intention and strengthen culturally responsive action.

MEET THE VOICES SHAPING THE CONVERSATION

Introducing Keynote Speaker Marissa Verma, Managing Director of Bindi Bindi Dreaming and a passionate cultural educator, businesswoman and advocate for inclusion and accessibility.

After contracting necrotising fasciitis and spending 11 months in hospital, Marissa had to relearn many parts of everyday life while adapting to disability. Her story speaks to extraordinary resilience, the strength of family and the hope that technology can create.

This Women’s Health Week, we celebrate the strength, health and wellbeing of women across our communities!

To celebrate the week, and as part of our our ongoing member engagement, this week we held a women's yarning session for IAHA members facilitated by the deadly Tanja Hirvonen and joined by our CEO Donna Murray and Deputy CEO Kylie Stothers. Thank you to all of our Deadly Blak women who joined this session 🙌🏽

Held from 7–11 September, Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week is Australia’s largest week dedicated to women’s health. This year’s theme, ‘Do it anyway’, is a reminder that looking after our health doesn’t have to be perfect - sometimes it’s about taking one small step, in a way that works for you.

Across the week, the focus is on five simple areas of wellbeing: to fuel, to move, to rest, to breathe and to connect.

For our women, health and wellbeing are holistic - encompassing physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual wellbeing, and connections to family, community and Country.

This Women’s Health Week, we encourage our members and communities to make space for their own health and wellbeing, have a yarn, reach out for support when it’s needed, and continue supporting the women around them.

Introducing Keynote Speaker Romalie Mokak, a Djugun man whose family come from Broome and a respected leader in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, policy and governance.

Romlie previously served as a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission, where he led significant work including the first review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. He has also led the Lowitja Institute and the Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association as CEO.

Professor Sean Taylor is a descendant of the Dauareb Tribe of Mer (Murray) Island in the Eastern Torres Strait and a nationally recognised leader in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Across more than 30 years in clinical practice, academic leadership, research and health-system reform, Professor Taylor has remained focused on improving health outcomes and embedding culturally
safe, community- and consumer-centred models of care.

Are you an allied health, nursing or medical student at university? Are you interested in pursuing a career in rural and remote Northern Territory?

IAHA NT Workforce Development, in partnership with IAHA, National Association of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Workers (NAATSIHWP) and the Deadly Vision Centre, are facilitating a primary health care and cultural immersion weekend in Central Australia from 8 – 11 October 2026.

Applications are open to university students studying allied health, nursing and medicine, with priority given to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and those from or with cultural, kinship and/or family connections in the NT.

Applications close 3 September - so don’t miss out!
