MND Australia MND Australia โ€“ advancing motor neurone disease care, advocacy and research Since 1983, we have been the voice for the MND community.

MND Australia is the national peak body of state organisations that support those living with and impacted by Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Our national and international networks help increase understanding of the disease and advocate for the needs of those affected. We fund world-class research for better treatments, improved care, and ultimately a cure

MND is a rapidly progressing neurodegenera

tive disease that impacts peopleโ€™s ability to move, walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The lifetime risk of developing MND is 1 in 300. Average life expectancy is only 2.5 years from diagnosis.

๐ŸŽ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŒ When Travis, a Year 6 student at Trinity Anglican School in Cairns, set up his MND Fruit Stall Fundraiser as part of a school project, he never imagined he would raise more than three times his original fundraising goal.

Inspired by his beloved Grandma Jane, who passed away from MND last year, Travis turned his project into a heartfelt mission to support other families impacted by this devastating disease. With the help of his local community, he sold fresh fruit, donuts, soft drinks and home-grown pumpkins ๐ŸŽƒ, raising an incredible $3,574 so far for MND Australia (and he's still going!).

Travis's compassion, determination and community spirit are a powerful reminder that you're never too young to make a difference. Every dollar he raises will help support Australians living with MND through care, advocacy and vital research ๐Ÿ’™

This is a big win for the MND community. ๐Ÿ’™

Today, the Australian Government announced that people living with MND aged 65 and over will automatically be classified as "urgent" in the aged care system.

This means eligible people with MND should receive aged care support within 30 days instead of waiting months for help.

The Government has also committed to protecting the NDIS MND Priority Pathway, which gives people living with MND faster access to assessments, funding and reassessments when needs change.

For people living with MND, time matters. Support needs can change quickly, and delays can have a profound impact on quality of life.

Importantly, the aged care changes will also apply to people with MND who are already waiting for Support at Home funding.

This announcement follows years of advocacy by people living with MND, carers, State MND Associations, clinicians, researchers and supporters across Australia.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories, spoken up and helped make change possible.

There is still more work to do, but today is an important step forward.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Neale Daniher AO.

Neale was a true MND warrior โ€” courageous, determined and relentless in his fight against this devastating disease. Over 10 years ago he co-founded what would become FightMND, creating a movement that has invested over $117 million in MND research. His vision and tireless efforts have accelerated progress towards a cure and given hope to thousands of families affected by MND.

Through his advocacy, leadership and unshakable spirit, Neale brought MND into the national conversation, ensuring many more Australians understand its impact. His extraordinary legacy was fittingly recognised when he was named the 2025 Australian of the Year.

On behalf of MND Australia, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Nealeโ€™s family, friends, and the entire FightMND community. His passing is a profound loss, not only for those who knew him personally, but for every Australian whose life has been touched by MND.

Vale Neale โ€” Australia has lost a hero.

"There is so much about this disease we just don't know."

MND Australia CEO Clare Sullivan joined A Current Affair in the wake of Jai Arrow's devastating diagnosis this week.

One of the biggest barriers researchers face is fragmented MND data across Australia. That's why we've been advocating for a National Unified MND Database to help connect researchers, clinics and patient data nationally.

Clare also reflected on the incredible outpouring of support from the community ๐Ÿ’™ Watch the full interview below โฌ‡๏ธ
