Let’s end October with something a little lighter.

Being a young carer can come with plenty of unexpected moments, but some are definitely more funny than scary.

What’s your completely non-serious young carer horror story?

“When someone says, ‘This will only take five minutes.’”

“When your phone is on 1%.”

“When you finally sit down and someone calls your name.”

“When the group assignment becomes a solo assignment.”

Make yours as dramatic as possible.

We are pleased to announce Chris Hayward as the new Chief Executive Officer of Carers NT, as we also recognise and thank Steve Vitone for his outstanding 21 years of service to the organisation.

After 21 years with Carers NT, including the last 13 years as CEO, Steve Vitone has decided to explore new opportunities and spend more time with family.

Steve Vitone's leadership, dedication and commitment have helped shape Carers NT into the organisation it is today. We extend our sincere thanks for his contribution to our people, carers, families and communities across the Northern Territory.

Sometimes being called “strong” or “responsible” can feel like a compliment, but young carers also need to know they can ask for help.

They don’t have to handle everything alone.

Their needs, goals and wellbeing matter too.

Save this for a reminder, or share it with a young carer who might need to hear it.

You had plans.

Then suddenly, your whole day looks completely different.

For young carers, plans can sometimes change when caring responsibilities, errands or other things come up. It can be frustrating when you have to rearrange something you were looking forward to.

Making time for your own plans and interests is important too.

What’s the most unexpected thing that has completely derailed your plans?

Wrong answers only.

Your brain can only keep so many tabs open.

When you're balancing caring, school, work, friends and everyday life, it can be easy to feel like there's always something else to remember.

Writing things down, taking a short break or stepping away for a few minutes can help clear some mental space.

You don't have to be switched on all the time.

What's taking up the most space in your brain right now?

We all have days when our energy is running low.

You might start the day feeling like you’ve got everything under control, then slowly run out of energy as everything starts piling up.

If you’re feeling drained, you don’t have to wait until you have nothing left before taking a break.

A short pause, some food or water, fresh air or a bit of quiet time can help you recharge.

What’s your personal “1% battery” warning sign?

Achievement unlocked: making it through another week.

Not every achievement comes with a certificate or a big milestone.

Sometimes it’s showing up, helping someone you care about, getting through a complicated week or still finding time for your own interests and goals.

Caring is important, but so is having a life of your own.

To every young carer across the NT, this one’s for you.

Some days feel like you’re keeping track of everything at once.

Appointments, homework, messages, getting somewhere on time, helping out and still trying to make space for your own life.

For young carers, these responsibilities can sit alongside school, work, relationships and their own plans.

This National Carers Week, we're recognising the many things young carers manage every day and making sure their contribution is seen.
