Support - We know that from time to time carers will need a bit of extra help.

Foster and Kinship Carers Association NT is an independent, non-government, member-based organisation supporting foster and kinship carers throughout the Northern Territory. Since commencing as a peak body in July 2011 Foster Carers Association NT has worked progressively to establish the organisation and develop a robust range of services that support and meet the ongoing needs of foster and kinship carers in all regions of the Northern Territory. Knowledge - We provide regular information about news, events, foster and kinship care and other related topics as well as in house training and links to external training that will assist carers to provide appropriate care to their foster children. Our staff are available when carers need someone to talk to, have questions about foster caring or are experiencing challenging situations. Advocacy - Our focus is on ensuring that the journey through the foster and kinship care system goes smoothly. Our Advocates are trained on all areas of Department of Children and Families (DCF) Foster and Kinship Care policy and procedures and can assist by attending meetings with carers and DCF as well as escalating unresolved matters to ensure the best outcome for the carer and their foster child/children.

As Children's Week 2026 draws to a close, we're taking a moment to celebrate the incredible children and young people across the Northern Territory, and the wonderful Foster and Kinship Carers who support them every day! ❤️

Every child is unique, with their own personality, interests, dreams, strengths and potential.

And sometimes, all it takes is having someone in their corner who believes in them.

💙 Someone who encourages them to try something new.

🌱 Someone who celebrates their achievements, big or small.

❤️ Someone who listens, supports them through challenges and reminds them that they matter.

🌏 Someone who embraces their individuality and helps them feel proud of who they are.

For children and young people in care, these everyday moments of encouragement, understanding and connection can make a lasting difference.

🧠 **WHEN BEHAVIOURS ESCALATE, KNOWING HOW TO RESPOND CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE!** 💙

Caring for children and young people who have experienced trauma can sometimes mean navigating challenging, unpredictable or even unsafe situations.

And when things escalate quickly, knowing what to do in the moment isn't always easy.

That's why FKCANT has partnered with **Build Up NT** to deliver a practical workshop specifically for our volunteer Foster and Kinship Carers!

💡 **Responding to High-Risk Behaviours**

This interactive workshop will explore:

✅ Understanding the aggression cycle and recognising early warning signs.

✅ Practical strategies to de-escalate challenging situations.

✅ Responding safely and confidently when behaviours become high-risk.

✅ Building confidence in managing difficult moments while supporting the wellbeing of everyone involved.

Our goal is to give carers practical tools and strategies they can take home and use in everyday situations.

🌏 **CHILDREN'S WEEK 2026 – EVERY CHILD DESERVES TO BELONG** 💙

This week, we're celebrating Children's Week, a time to recognise the rights, voices and individuality of children and young people across Australia! 🌻

This year's theme reminds us that **every child has the right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practise their religion.**

For children and young people in foster and kinship care, maintaining these connections is especially important.

❤️ Culture isn't just about where we come from. It's the stories we share, the languages we speak, the traditions we celebrate and the people who help us understand who we are.

Here in the Northern Territory, we're fortunate to live among an incredible diversity of cultures, languages and communities.

For our Foster and Kinship Carers, supporting a child's connection to their family, culture and community can be one of the most meaningful parts of the caring journey.

Sometimes that means learning something new, asking questions, embracing different traditions or simply making sure a child knows that **who they are, and where they come from, matters.**

💙 This Children's Week, let's celebrate the unique identity of every child and young person, and recognise the important role our carers play in helping them feel safe, connected and proud of who they are.

The Things Nobody Sees

Not everything a Foster or Kinship Carer does can be seen from the outside. ❤️

It's the nights spent worrying about a child who is struggling to settle.

The appointments rearranged, the difficult conversations, and the plans that change at a moment's notice.

It's celebrating the smallest achievements, even when nobody else understands just how significant they are.

And sometimes, it's putting on a brave face when you're exhausted, frustrated or simply unsure what tomorrow might bring.

There isn't always recognition for these moments. No certificates, no applause, and often nobody around to witness them.

But that doesn't make them any less important.

To our Foster and Kinship Carers across the Northern Territory, we see you. We appreciate you. And we're grateful for everything you do, especially the things nobody sees. 💙

As National Carers Week comes to a close, we want to say thank you. 💙

To the foster and kinship carers across the NT who keep showing up, advocating, adapting and making space for children and young people in their homes and families, your contribution matters.

So much of caring happens quietly.

The early mornings.
The appointments.
The school runs.
The difficult conversations.
The celebrations.
The ordinary routines that help life feel steady.

This week has been about recognising carers, but our appreciation doesn’t stop here.

We’re looking forward to coming together to celebrate our incredible Foster and Kinship Carers, and the children and young people in care across the NT.

There’s no booking required — just come along.

And if you can’t make it right at 4:00 pm, that’s completely fine. Arrive whenever you can during the afternoon.
