Children's Book Council of Australia NT Branch

Children's Book Council of Australia NT Branch Our programs encourage storytelling and connect young Territorians with great Australian literature. This year’s theme is READ, GROW, INSPIRE.

The CBCA NT Branch is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation, which strives to enrich the lives of young Territorians by delivering programs that encourage storytelling and celebrate Australian children’s literature. We partner with authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, schools, libraries and other organisations in the children’s book world to bring words, images and stories into t

he hearts and minds of young people across our community. We organise author and illustrator visits to schools and host the deliciously anticipated BookFeast each year. Every year the CBCA presents awards to books of literary merit for their outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature. This is followed by all the colourful fanfare of CBCA Book Week (19 - 25 August 2023).

Join the Darwin Symphony Orchestra Young Artists for a very special musical storytime tomorrow.

This year’s Children’s Book Week theme Symphony of Stories encourages young people to step into a magical world where reading and music intertwine.

The talented DSO Young Artists have created an original musical score to accompany a live reading of the beloved picture book The River by Sally Morgan, illustrated by Johnny Warrkatja Malibirr.

It’s a celebration of creativity, imagination, and storytelling through a unique collaborative performance. Perfect for young readers, their families and music lovers alike.

We can’t wait to experience The River splash to life through the imagination and talent of these young maestros 🎶📚

‘Watch out for the snot!’ is the advice given by Territory-based author Anthony Piccone when talking about his middle grade novel, The Sneezy Sliming Snot Monster.

When garbage bags start falling from the sky and an alien crash lands in 12-year-old environmental crusader Billy’s backyard things escalate quickly. Billy and his classmate Johnno chase the alien through the streets of Tearabagapart, which is already a little on the nose given its claim to fame as host to the regional rubbish tip.

The stakes are high as the boys race to stop aliens dumping their rubbish on Earth, while dodging metal-melting snot, and out manoeuvring a fame-hungry professor. The novel is full of fun wordplay, out of this world characters, cheeky acronyms, and plenty of action.

Inspired by Anthony’s grandson’s resilience and stories shared during a challenging time, The Sneezy Sliming Snot Monster is the first book in the trilogy. Signed copies are available from The Bookshop Darwin 🛸👽🦠

The 2026 Shadow Judging season has started with young Territorians eagerly reading and discussing the shortlisted books in their chosen category of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.

Creating a group of Shadow Judges is a powerful way to connect young readers with the shortlisted books in a safe space where their opinions are valued.

These conversations provide a platform for participants to vote for the book they believe deserves to be crowned the Shadow Judging Book of the Year.

A big thank you to Thetis Lyda, Year 1 Classroom Teacher at The Essington School in Darwin, who shared her school’s 2025 experience.

There’s still time to organise and register a group.

Registrations close on 19 June.

Visit https://shadowjudging.cbca.org.au/ for more information and to register.
