Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) is a free, confidential service. We assist disadvantaged members of the community to protect their legal rights. We work towards a community where everyone has access to legal advice and support. We seek to challenge unjust laws and procedures, and to ensure that people are aware of their legal rights.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK - All In: a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

The theme makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

It also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

Work with Us!

🪪 Social Security Solicitor

Make your work count
This is not a standard legal role.

You will lead DCLS’s social security practice and deliver a national pilot service. You will work on real issues. Centrelink decisions. Debts. Appeals. You will help people who are under pressure and often out of options.

You will also shape how this service works across Australia.

What You Will Do
▪️Lead our social security legal practice
▪️Deliver advice through a national phone service (NSSATS)
▪️Run casework, including complex matters and appeals
▪️Identify patterns and push for system change
▪️Support and mentor other solicitors
▪️Contribute to law reform and advocacy
▪️Deliver practical legal education in the community

Why This Role Stands Out
▪️You lead a key practice area
▪️You work on a national pilot, not just local files
▪️You see direct client impact every day
▪️You contribute to reform, not just advice

LAW WEEK 2026 - Spot the Legal Issue.

This year’s event is targeting community organisations and frontline workers to improve access to justice by strengthening legal literacy across the community sector.

Frontline workers are often the first point of contact for clients. Legal issues are frequently missed, or clients are not referred because the problem isn’t recognised, or is seen as too complex, costly, or overwhelming.

LEARN:
• Practical skills to spot legal issues early
• Understanding of when and how to refer clients to legal help
• Knowledge of common legal problems in the community

Thank you to Jinson Anto Charls MLA for taking the time to meet with DCLS
We appreciated the opportunity to discuss the proposed NDIS reforms, the Thriving Kids initiative, and the challenges facing older Territorians experiencing abuse.

These are important issues for the Northern Territory, particularly given our unique challenges in delivering services across regional and remote communities. We welcome the opportunity to share the experiences of the people we support and the issues we are seeing on the ground.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and working together to improve outcomes for Territorians with disability, older people, and their families.

Had a good catch up with Rachel Bowker from Darwin Community Legal Service ahead of the Disability Reform Ministerial Council.

We discussed a range of important matters including the NDIS Amendment Bill, the Thriving Kids initiative and issues relating to elder abuse.

Appreciate the important advocacy and support provided by Darwin Community Legal Service across the Territory.
