STATEMENT - NTPA CONDEMNS ATTACKS ON OUR MEMBERS

The Northern Territory Police Association strongly condemns the unacceptable and violent actions of individuals who chose to attack police and other frontline workers overnight.

Yesterday, we all felt the profound devastation following the discovery of Kumanjayi Little Baby. It was the worst possible outcome. The community is grieving deeply, and so too are our members.

After this news, many officers remained on duty, continuing the search for Jefferson Lewis. Those who had briefly stepped away to rest and process the emotional toll of recent days were quickly called back in - not to continue the search, but to respond as backup to colleagues under attack.

This behaviour is disgraceful and will not be tolerated. The Northern Territory Police Association will not stand by quietly while our members are targeted and assaulted.

While we recognise the immense grief, anger and pain being experienced across the community - emotions which are also shared by our members, this disgusting behaviour is not an acceptable response.

This is a time for calm, and a time to mourn with dignity and respect.

Such conduct cannot continue and those involved in yesterday’s riot should expect to be held accountable.

To our members: we stand with you. We thank you for your dedication, and we are immensely proud of the work you continue to do under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

Stay safe and look out for each other.

The Northern Territory Police Association is utterly heartbroken by the death of Kumanjayi Little Baby.

We hold her family, friends and the entire Alice Springs community close in our thoughts, as they face an unimaginable grief. No words can truly capture the sorrow felt at a time like this.

To all the first responders and all those volunteers who gave their time and strength in the search for Kumanjayi Little Baby, we thank you. Your efforts were driven by hope and care, and we share in the heartbreak of this devastating outcome.

To our members, we know this outcome will have an impact on you all. Policing can be deeply confronting, and nothing weighs heavier than the death of a child. Moments like these leave a lasting impact, and it’s important to take care of yourselves and each other. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you need it - our office is always here for you. We thank you for your strength, your compassion, and your unwavering commitment to bringing Kumanjayi Little Baby home - but our job is still not done and won't be until we bring her justice.

There isn’t a single Territorian right now who isn’t hoping and praying for the safe return of 5-year-old Sharon Granites, who was allegedly abducted in Alice Springs.

As the search enters its fourth day, we want to acknowledge our members and the broader community who have come together, tirelessly searching and supporting one another during this incredibly difficult time.

To those working extended overtime hours, and to those who have left their own families to travel to Alice Springs and assist in the search, we thank you.

To little Sharon and her family, our police are some of the best in the country, and we promise they are doing everything they can to find you – we will not rest until we do.

While the NTPA Headquarters in Darwin continues to operate at full pace - responding daily to the growing needs of our members - there’s no substitute for being on the ground.

NTPA President, Nathan Finn knows how important it is to step outside the office and connect face-to-face with members across the Territory. Nathan recently travelled to a number of remote southern stations, taking the time to visit members where they serve.

These visits are about more than just showing up, they’re about listening. Hearing firsthand the very real challenges our members face every day, understanding local conditions, and ensuring their voices are represented where it matters most.

Because supporting our members means being present, staying connected, and standing alongside them, wherever they are.

Congratulations to Senior Sergeant Donna Cayley, who today was awarded the Patricia Anne Brennan Award.

This award recognises individuals who champion the advancement of women within our organisation, and Donna’s dedication to supporting and empowering others makes her a truly deserving recipient.

We also take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate all women ahead of this Sunday’s International Women’s Day. We celebrate the incredible women, not only within the Northern Territory Police Force and our NTPA members, but all women whose dedication, leadership, and hard work make a difference every day.

Thank you for the improvement all women make in our community. Your commitment, resilience, and professionalism help shape a stronger future for everyone.

STATEMENT - CRITICAL INCIDENT - ALICE SPRINGS

NTPA President Nathan Finn has travelled to Alice Springs to provide direct support to members involved in a critical incident overnight, where an alleged offender targeted police with his vehicle, resulting in a police firearm being discharged.

This was an extremely serious and dangerous incident. Having a vehicle allegedly used as a weapon against police underscores the escalating risks our members face while carrying out their duties to protect the Northern Territory community.

The NTPA’s priority is, and always will be, the safety and welfare of our members. No police officer should have to fear for their life simply for doing their job, yet incidents like this are becoming far too common.

The NTPA will stand firmly behind all members involved and ensure they are fully supported in the aftermath of this incident.

Vale, Retired Senior Aboriginal Community Police Officer Betty Herbert.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Betty Herbert on 23 December 2025. A proud and respected Senior Aboriginal Community Police Officer, Betty dedicated 14 years of service with the Northern Territory Police Force on Groote Eylandt before retiring in December 2017.

Betty was a trusted leader, mentor and bridge between community and police - providing invaluable cultural guidance, wisdom and support to both her colleagues and her community. Her unwavering commitment to the people of Alyangula, Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakburra left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Betty’s family, friends and community during this time.

Rest in peace, Betty.

To our hardworking Members,

While many are spending today with family and friends, we know Christmas often means long shifts, missed celebrations and time away from loved ones. Your dedication to keeping Territorians safe does not go unnoticed.

To those working through Christmas and the New Year, we hope you still find moments of joy and connection, whether with family, friends or colleagues.

From the NTPA family to yours, thank you for everything you do. Stay safe, take care of yourselves, and know your work truly makes a difference.

Our hearts are heavy following the horrific events at Bondi on Sunday. Two incredibly brave NSW Police Officers were injured while protecting the community and are currently recovering in hospital.

Constable Scott Dyson and Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert ran toward danger without hesitation, putting the safety of others before their own. Their courage and selflessness remind us of the incredible sacrifices police officers and their families make every day.

Fundraisers have been established to support these officers and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. If you’re able to help in any way, even a small contribution can make a meaningful difference.
