From the Archives: Germany to Australia

Join us at the National Archives of Australia on 26 October to explore stories of German migration through original archival records—and hear the remarkable story of Klaus Scharrer (Jennings family), who arrived in Canberra as a young German carpenter in the early 1950s.

We’re excited to partner with the Australian Institute of International Affairs - National Office and the European Union in Australia for the launch of Canberra German Week 2026 on 16 October at the National Press Club of Australia.

Join us for our annual cultural dialogue featuring Ambassador-designate Mr Lawrence Meredith and Chargé d’Affaires Dr Oliver Landwehr, European Union Delegation to Australia. Further speakers to be announced.

This year’s conversation will explore Horizon Europe, the EU–Australia Free Trade Agreement, and the future of Australia–Europe relations, with a particular focus on Germany’s role and connections across these areas.

A musical prelude to Canberra German Week

The Canberra Bach Ensemble is delighted to have been invited by the German Embassy Canberra to collaborate with Canberra German Week 2026.

Our performances of Bach’s 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘦 BWV 198 on 3 and 4 October are now featured in the Canberra German Week program as pre-launch events. With the opening performance falling on 3 October—German Unity Day—the connection could hardly be more fitting.
