Nature reserves will be closed overnight on weekdays until July 31 for the annual kangaroo management program.

The ACT government said this year it aimed to cull a total of 3,633 kangaroos from reserves in the ACT and Googong.

The ACT government says the program is aimed at preserving critically endangered native grasslands that have been overgrazed by kangaroos and wallabies.

The majority of Kangaroo and Wallabies habitat in the country has been eroded over hundreds of years to make space for land development and notably agricultural (which takes a massive amount of land to sustain), forcing these animals into smaller, denser and less safe environments.

The Animal Defenders office had this to say;
"Killing thousands of local native animals in the remnants of their own natural habitat because humans have destroyed the rest of the environment is not only unethical, it is highly incompetent. . Clearly the ACT Government should be valuing these animals, not only for their intrinsic value, but also for their enormous appeal to visitors to the nation’s so-called Bush Capital."

To oppose the upcoming shooting of 3,633 kangaroos in ACT nature reserves:
1. Write to the ACT Environment Minister Suzanne Orr ([email protected]).
2. Come to a rally against the cull in Canberra on 10 June 2026 at 12pm outside the legislative assembly

15 reserves will be formally closed from 6pm to 6am Sunday to Thursday, starting Tuesday June 9 (today) to Friday July 31 2026:

Over 60 people joined animal rights media organisation Farm Transparency Project (FTP) in Canberra yesterday for a hearing before the High Court of Australia, to determine the fate of censored slaughterhouse footage.

Yesterday's hearing was the final legal showdown in a case that has stretched for over two years. The outcome will determine whether or not FTP will be able to publish hours of footage of animal cruelty, captured inside the Eurobin facility of the Game Meats Company in 2024.

The footage is currently under injunction after a Federal Court appeal overturned an initial judgement and granted a gag order on the basis of copyright ownership, in an unprecedented development of the law.

Both parties presented their cases to the full bench of the High Court, with GMC defending the gag while FTP argued for the public's right to see the footage, which FTP says is of great public interest. The Human Rights Legal Centre (HRLC) and the Alliance for Journalists Freedom (AJF) joined the proceedings as amicus curiae, arguing that the Federal Court ruling has chilling ramifications for press freedom.

At the conclusion of the hearing, GMC sought leave to apply to amend its notice of contention, in order to present new arguments as to why orders of the full Federal Court should be upheld without relying on a constructive trust. Leave to apply was granted by the court. GMC will have 14 days to file written submissions in support of its application, and FTP will have 14 days to respond.

We had a productive day speaking up for ACT wombats!

Almost 70 people signed our petition, which is calling on the ACT Government to rule out any policies that would allow for wombats to be killed in the ACT.

If you would like to add your name and help our wombats, we have the petition linked in our bio! πŸ”—

Large areas of the ACT’s parks and reserves will be temporarily closed from May 11 to June 12 as part of the government’s annual aerial pest control program.

EXCITING NEWS - FIRST TIME EVER!
We have some news that doesn't come along often, and we wanted you to be the first to know.

A group of generous supporters have launched our Out of the Dark Winter Appeal and made an incredible pledge. They will match every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $20,000. Your gift right now will have double the impact for every animal in our care.

But donations will only be matched until the fund runs out, or until 30 June, whichever happens first.

In thirteen years of caring for animals at Little Oak, we have never been able to offer something like this. And it's come at a time we need it most. Right now we're scrambling to secure hay for 338 animals through a national shortage, we need funds urgently to place the order.

We'll tell you more about the matching offer in a moment. First, I want to share why this matters - here is Grace's story.

It was a frosty morning when a horse rider came across something that stopped her in her tracks. A newborn lamb, alone near a tree, impossibly small, impossibly still. A little further away, her mother. Gone. The dogs had seen to that.

She rode to the nearest farm. Surely someone would want to know. Surely someone would help.

The farmer's answer was as simple as it was devastating. Put her back with her mother. The dogs would finish the job that night.

The rider looked at this tiny lamb, brand new to a world that had already dealt her the worst possible hand, and exclaimed that this plan wasn't good enough. She offered to take her herself and then set about finding a safe place for her.

That somewhere safe was us.

Right now, heavily pregnant ewes are out in paddocks across the country as temperatures plummet. This winter, there will be more Graces out there.

We don't know their names yet. We don't know exactly when they'll arrive or what they'll need. But we know they're coming, and we know what it costs to say yes to every single one of them.

As we head into winter, we are facing huge price increases. Feed costs have exploded, we are struggling to find hay. Vet care costs more. The long drives to specialists hours away cost more. The floods in QLD and fires in VIC mean there is a nationwide hay shortage, and we are still in drought here. We care for 338 animals every single day, for the rest of their lives, without any government funding. We can only do it because of you.

And right now, thanks to the Out of the Dark matching fund, your gift will go twice as far:

- Your $50 gift becomes $100, buying twice the number of hay bales.

- Your $100 gift becomes $200, formula and supplies for vulnerable lambs

- Your $250 gift becomes $500, enough to cover an emergency vet call-out

- Your $500 gift becomes $1,000, a specialist vet visit for an animal with complex needs

- Your $1,000 gift becomes $2,000, covering feed costs for a month

- Your $2,500 gift becomes $5,000, enough for a truckload of hay

Your gift doubled. Every animal helped twice over. But only until the fund runs out or 30 June, whichever comes first. Please don't wait.

One person on a cold morning refused to walk away. You are that kind of person, too. We know it because you're here, reading this, caring about animals that most of the world never thinks about.

This winter, be that person twice over. Donate today and bring an animal out of the dark.

P.S. Your donation will be doubled, but only until the fund runs out or 30 June, whichever comes first. Please give today if you can, and please share this with anyone who might want to help bring an animal out of the dark this winter.

We did it. $90,000. 539 donations. One very loved up sheep.

When we launched the Urgent Summer Appeal back in October, we didn't know summer would be as bad as it was. But we wanted to be prepared. We set the goal knowing the funds we needed to get through summer - but this summer has been far tougher than we imagined. The drought, the heatwaves, the relentless pressure on the animals and on us. We didn't know if we'd get there. It was a big ask, but you showed up, again and again, and today we are standing here absolutely gobsmacked and so deeply grateful.

You might remember Sunny. Found alone in a paddock, covered in maggots, too weak to stand, blind in one eye, left to die. The night we brought him home, we didn't know if he'd make it to morning.

Well. That's him in the photo. Kissing volunteer Ally. A complete ray of sunshine.

Today, Sunny is the picture of health, he is playful, and very much alive because of you. And so are hundreds of other animals who will have food, water, and care this summer because of what this community built together.

From all of us at Little Oak, and from Dave the Kelpie (Puplic Relations Officer) who is also very pleased with himself, thank you.

From the bottom of our hearts. πŸ‘πŸ§‘

Today we say goodbye to Jane Goodall, a woman whose life’s work showed us compassion, courage, and respect for all beings.

Her words remind us that every choice matters, every action shapes the world we share. Though she is gone, her legacy asks us to keep choosing kindness and to carry her vision forward.

Rest gently, Jane. The world is better because you were here, and it will keep changing for the better because of you and the hearts you have inspired.
