On this day in Middle-earth, 3 November 3019: the Battle of Bywater.

Led by Merry, and joined by a hundred Tooks brought by Pippin, the hobbits stand up to the ruffians who have taken over their home. Nineteen hobbits fall. Then, at Bag End, they come face to face with 'Sharkey', and find he is Saruman. Frodo spares his life, but Wormtongue turns on his master, and the War of the Ring is over at last.

Tell us, which hobbit would you most want beside you at the Battle of Bywater, and why?

Today is an important day in Middle-earth.

In T.A 3019, we see the Scouring of the Shire.

The Battle of Bywater was the last military engagement of the War of the Ring, and the second and last known battle to have been fought within the bounds of the Shire.

During this we see the passing of Saruman and the death of Gríma Wormtongue

Finally the War of the Ring is done.

Today in 1967 saw the first publication of “The Road Goes Ever On: A Song Cycle”.

This is a book of sheet music, with poems by Tolkien, and music by Donald Swann.

The first edition was published in 1967, containing six poems from The Lord of the Rings and one from The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. Within the book are included Tolkien's own notes and translations on two Elvish text: "Namárië" and "A Elbereth Gilthoniel", thus it is also an important document of the glossary and lore of Elvish.

The second edition was released in 1978, adding the "Bilbo's Last Song"; in the foreword Swann recounts his collaborations with J.R.R. Tolkien; and the third edition in 2002, adding the poem "Lúthien Tinúviel" from The Silmarillion.

The third edition, after having been long out of print, was finally reprinted

Today in T.A. 3019, Gandalf and the four Hobbits leave Bree while Gandalf leaves to visit Tom Bombadil.

Later at night the Travellers come to the Brandywine Bridge.
