Tasmania has reached a drumMUSTER milestone: more than 1 million empty AgVet chemical containers collected for recycling!

Thank you to the growers, collection sites, councils, retailers, manufacturers and contractors who have helped make this possible. Every clean drum returned helps keep valuable material out of landfill.

What is considered Group 1 in ChemClear?

Group 1 chemicals are eligible for free collection through ChemClear, provided they meet specific criteria.

To qualify, chemicals must be in original containers with intact labels, manufactured by participating drumMUSTER companies, and either currently registered or deregistered within the past two years. They must also be within two years of their expiry date and not held as unwanted inventory by distributors or AgVet stores.

Understanding these requirements helps ensure your chemicals can be accepted for collection and managed safely.

What counts as “clean” for drumMUSTER?

For a drum to be accepted, it needs to be properly prepared and free from chemical residue.

That means it has been triple-rinsed, drained and is visibly clean — with no remaining product inside or on the outside of the container.

Drums that still contain residue will not be accepted for collection.

Taking the time to prepare containers properly helps ensure they can be safely handled and recycled.

Getting your drums ready for recycling? A few final checks can make all the difference.

Before heading to a drumMUSTER collection site, make sure your drums have been triple-rinsed and free from chemical residue. Lids must be removed, and only eligible containers that are part of the program can be accepted.

Taking a moment to check your drums are properly prepared helps ensure they can be safely handled and recycled without delays at collection.

What does stewardship actually mean?

Simply put, stewardship means taking responsibility for a product throughout its entire lifecycle.

In the AgVet industry, this means considering how chemicals and packaging are developed, supplied, transported, stored and used—as well as what happens when they are no longer needed.

For Agsafe, stewardship is put into practice through safer workplaces, industry training and the responsible collection and recovery of empty containers, bags and unwanted chemicals.

It is about making informed decisions that protect people, support industry and reduce environmental impacts.

Registering your unwanted AgVet chemicals with ChemClear is the first step towards safe disposal—but they must also be stored safely while awaiting collection.

Keep chemicals in their original containers with labels intact and store them in a secure area, protected from weather and potential damage. Follow the product label and safety data sheet, separate incompatible chemicals and keep unwanted products clearly apart from chemicals still in use.
