We give Canberra artists the resources and environment to develop their practice, take risks, test their ideas, and be ambitious with their art. Cahoots is You Are Here’s practice development program for Canberra artists and arts producers. Participants spend eight months meeting for critical discussions, sharing their work and practice, collaboration, creative producing exercises and activities d

esigned to form a community that can effectively critique and support each other’s art, while simultaneously working towards their own individual practice development goals. There is no requirement to create work with a public outcome in Cahoots, but artists are offered the option of presenting work in the You Are Here Festival if that suits their needs.

✨ SCENERY 5 ✨

We’re delighted to be hosting the 5th edition of Scenery this Friday!

This site-responsive edition will see Nicci Haynes projections expanded across multiple surfaces throughout the venue, transforming the space into an enveloping field of moving light, texture and abstraction. The live visuals will unfold alongside immersive sound works from Sebastian Field, Orthotyp-a, and Umki.

sebastianfield is a Canberra-based musician, composer and producer working across ambient, experimental and electronic music, and the producer and artistic director of Scenery. Layered and processed ambient guitar through a network of pedals and modular synthesis, shaping evolving harmonics, texture and slow-moving tonal environments in real time.

O.r.t.h.o.t.y.p_a is the experimental sound project of Canberra-based artist and composer Paul Young. Dark ambient movements of resonance, drone and atmosphere, shifting between density and openness.

umki (L Wheeler) is a multidisciplinary artist working across sound, image and performance. Hyper-textural sound-worlds through electronic manipulations.

Show n Tell is our invite for anyone and everyone to check out our new HQ.

A bit like an opening night, a bit like an open studio, a bit like having some friends over for dinner. We hope you can come hang with us and meet all the gorgeous people we’re working and sharing the building with!

There will be displays of the creations made by recent workshop participants, our studio holders will be showing some of their work and process, we’ll have Trust FM on the speakers, and Trust Club Cafe will serve up some yummy dahl for a light supper.

We’ll have info to share with anyone who is interested in the YAH Club and how we can support artists, info about using/hiring our space, Blank will be on hand with details of their Activation Lab, the Rainbow Arrow Collective can tell you what they’re working on.

Last year, our friend Anna Trundle from Keep Co CBR made a warm introduction to some people with an under-utilised building CBD - City Walk Centre at 131 City Walk.

As the real estate agent showed me through, I imagined studios where there was a concrete floor and beautiful natural light, a workshop space where there was enough space for people to spread out, a gig space in that kind of strange room that could definitely be made cozy, film screenings in the room with the 8m white wall we could project onto, a little room where we can run our artist support sessions, coworking space for artists in the room that’s already fit-out for it, offices for small creative businesses, a street gallery in the little room on the ground floor with the big windows, and hundreds of people playing music and dancing on the rooftop courtyard.

YAH started a partnership with Blank Cultural Platform to make all this a reality. We negotiated our way into the building, and launched in March. Since then, we’ve had dozens of artists in the building, creating and sharing their work (tagged in the comments below!)

We know Canberra needs this - space and support to experiment, develop, and grow. We’ve only witnessed a fraction of what’s possible, and we’re determined to build something enduring and sustainable here at 131 City Walk.

We are absolutely thrilled to have these ABSOLUTE CUTIES running workshops at our new space in the city, starting THIS WEEK!

We were tickled by their ideas for workshops and we know they’re gonna be a blast. If you like FUN and/or ARTS & CRAFTS and/or NICE PEOPLE then you will probably like these workshops.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Alexis Malflores is a toy artist who breathes whimsy into everyday life. Her work has transformed complex topics like gambling into playful miniature dioramas filled with colour and charm. She loves crafting, storytelling, and community, which she weaves together through creative events focused on making art feel approachable, social, and welcoming for everyone. In her workshop series, participants can make their own cute or cursed plush toy from scratch.

Working with recycled materials such as cardboard and salvaged electronics, Tom Buckland creates playful, interactive and experimental installation, video and performance work that invites the audience to embark on a journey of discovery. In their workshop series, participants will transform cardboard and other recycled materials into fun moving bird puppets, and create simple mechanical mechanisms to make their bird flip, flap and come to life.

For one gorgeous evening, this very d-i-v-e-r-s-e group of musicians will create a continuous long-form improvised performance shaped through deep listening, collaborating and responding.

The room will be stage-less so you can wander, find a cozy corner, or stretch out on the floor and sink into the musical conversation unfolding in real time.

🌙 Melt is the multi-instrumental project of Jordan Rodger, blending Eno-inspired loop-based music, post-rock grooves and contemporary jazz. For this special performance, Melt expands into a two-drum-kit quintet, with Jordan guiding the improvised shape of the evening.

🌙 Ziyu Chen is a professional guzheng player from Canberra’s GlowLing Band. Through the shimmering sounds of this 2,700-year-old Chinese instrument, she shares a sense of peace, beauty and connection to a rich musical tradition.

🌙 ALPHAMALE is the experimental viola-and-electronics project of Hannah de Feyter, whose work spans sonic installation, theatre sound design and film soundtracks. Immersive sounds somewhere between music and atmosphere.

🌙 Lucyvale is the ambitious solo project of Lucy Skipper, exploring music that unfolds slowly and transforms over time. Drawing from post-rock, folk, krautrock, noise and heavier experimental sounds, Lucyvale embraces long-form journeys and surprising destinations.

Monshter Making is a cosy 3-part beginner-friendly toy design workshop where participants will create their own weird, cute, sentimental, or slightly cursed plush toy from scratch. We’ll spend a few winter evenings choosing colours, painting faces, sewing tiny creatures together, and slowly bringing them to life in a relaxed and welcoming space.

Week 1 focuses on sewing and building the plush body, Week 2 is all about painting faces and adding personality, and Week 3 covers final assembly, accessories, clothing, and finishing touches. At the end of the series, participants will be able to photograph their creations in a cute toy photography setup.
No prior sewing, painting, or toy-making experience is needed. The workshop is designed specifically for beginners, with guidance from both the instructor and a written guide that participants can take home.

This winter, You Are Here is hosting a series of cozy creative workshops at our new HQ in the city. Come learn something new, meet some lovely people, and make something to cherish.

FLIP & FLAPPIN’ BIRD PUPPETS

Get hands-on and join Canberra artist Tom Buckland transforming cardboard and other recycled materials into fun moving bird puppets. With simple materials participants will learn how to create simple mechanical mechanisms to make their bird flip, flap and come to life. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels.

Tom Buckland is a Canberra based artist. Working with recycled materials such as cardboard and salvaged electronics, Buckland creates playful, interactive and experimental installation, video and performance work that invites the audience to embark on a journey of discovery. They have exhibited and taught widely across Australia.

Participants will progressively create their bird puppets over three weeks:

Workshop 1 - Wednesday 24 June
Workshop 2 - Wednesday 1 July
Workshop 3 - Wednesday 8 July

All workshops run from 6:30pm-8:30pm at our Workshop in the city! Level 1, 131 City Walk.

All materials are provided. These workshops are designed to be welcoming, relaxed, and low-pressure — perfect for absolute beginners as well as people looking to reconnect with their creativity or try something different this winter.

Our space is alcohol-free, open to people aged 16+, and focused on creating a comfortable and inclusive environment where you can experiment, make mistakes, and enjoy the process.

What a little treat we have cooking for you!

Kicking off You Are Here’s series of delightfully cozy winter workshops and gigs, we’re thrilled to welcome Sandy Ma for a very special weekend of sound, textiles and curious joy.

On Sunday 7 June, join Sandy for a two-hour Touching Wires workshop exploring textile computing, embroidery and sound-making through reflective storytelling and e-textiles.
With a background in creative computing, Sandy’s practice intersects embodiment, sound and performance to create playful and surprising interactive experiences. In this hands-on workshop, participants will embroider conductive textiles that can be plugged into Sandy’s Touching Wires synthesiser system to create sound, before taking home their own conductive embroidered memories.

A live conversation between plants, fungi, machines, and human musicians. An interspecies improvisational trio exploring a hybrid sonic language of biosignals, modular synthesis, and live drums. Drummer Kieran Monaghan transforms living data from plants and fungi into voltage, translated into sound via modular synthesizer, and responds in real time, creating a feedback loop between human, organism, and machine.

Reuben Ingall
Witness an observance of domestic meditation. Embrace monotasking, patiently watch the pot boil. Symbolic actions create social cohesion and reinforce shared values. Ritual binds us, generates collective energy. Supra-sensible connection forms a secret society. A chosen defrostonaut will take communion. Reuben is gonna cook a pie in a microwave for noise music.

Harland Rust
Aging outlaws Harland Rust (Liam Jamieson and Rosa Bassett) emerge from hiding, exuding noise mutations borne of swirling Kansas dust and sick fixation on “The Cat in the Hat” (2003). Harland Rust’s purview has inflated, exploring the dross of pop culture through samples forced to eat themselves, burnt purple slime, and fried electronics.

Sandy Ma
With a background in creative computing, Sandy Ma intersects embodiment, sound, and performance to share moments of curious joy. Sandy creates inclusive interdisciplinary learning spaces to connect the wonders of creativity with audiences beyond art thinkers and makers.

Feemer
I make sounds with things (ideally relaxing). I will frantically move about to make sure the different sounds sound good together. Once they are properly combined I may stop moving and celebrate. A guitar will be there. Combined sounds will be mushed together to form just one sound so that I can add more. Enjoy.
