NEW SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT πŸ“£β€πŸŒŸ

'Gia Ophelia' is a darkly funny one-woman show, coming to Canberra for one week only.

Winner of the Emerging Artist Award and a finalist for Best in Theatre at Sydney Fringe Festival 2025, 'Gia Ophelia' brings together a team of Sydney and Canberra early-career artists for its ACT debut, after an acclaimed season at KXT on Broadway.

Struggling with the uncertainty of her future and a stalled acting career, Gia wants to play Ophelia one last time. But when a disastrous acting residency sends this dream spiralling out of control, she has to reckon with herself, and her identity as a woman and an artist. Gia is growing up, aging out, and ready to take on Ophelia one last time. This time, she’s going to get it right. She has to.

Canberra-born, Sydney-based theatre director Jo Bradley returns home for her Canberra directing debut in July with 'Gia Ophelia' by Grace Wilson β€” a darkly comic one-woman satire starring Annie Stafford, skewering sexism and ageism in the arts.

Our July school holiday program is here!

At Canberra Youth Theatre, young people don't just attend activities β€” they create original work.

A Play in 4 Days invites young people in Years 1–6 to build an original performance from scratch, guided by a professional theatre-maker. From first idea to final sharing in just four days β€” two sessions to choose from.

Hop In! takes Years 4–6 inside Canberra Museum and Gallery to create an immersive world that audiences can walk through and explore β€” giant bunnies, shifting spaces, and a backstage tour of Canberra Theatre Centre thrown in!

No previous experience required. Just curiosity, creativity and a willingness to jump in.

πŸ“£ CALL OUT FOR ACTORS (18–25)

Canberra Youth Theatre is seeking expressions of interest for "Beyond the Algorithm" β€” a bold new theatre project exploring one of the most urgent issues facing young people today.

Led by researcher Vivian Gerrand and theatre director Robin Davidson through the ANU Wellspring Initiative, this project uses Forum Theatre β€” an interactive performance style where audiences step into scenes to explore how situations can change.

Together, participants will investigate:
πŸ”Ή What draws people into online cultures of misogyny
πŸ”Ή How harmful patterns can be interrupted
πŸ”Ή How communities can better support those impacted

Part artistic project, part community intervention, "Beyond the Algorithm" creates a creative, supportive space for young people to share insights, ask difficult questions, and shape conversations that matter.

The creative team brings extensive experience working with young people on complex and sensitive topics, with participant wellbeing at the centre of the process.

Rehearsals (evenings):
β€’ Tue 23 June
β€’ Tue 30 June
β€’ Wed 1 July
β€’ Tue 21 July

Performance: Wednesday 22 July at The Street Theatre

Expressions of Interest close Monday 8 June: https://forms.gle/9otJdbwxf7BTEi1Y8

Help shape the future of the arts in the ACT πŸ’‘

The ACT Government is currently undertaking consultation to shape the next Arts, Culture and Creative Policy β€” a process that will influence how our sector is supported, resourced, and valued in the years ahead.

We're encouraging everyone in our community β€” artists, young people, families, collaborators, supporters, and arts lovers β€” to take a few minutes to contribute their voice.

πŸ‘‰ You can access the survey below.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/277LWJY

⏰ Closes: 11:59pm on Friday 29 May 2026.

At Canberra Youth Theatre, we're entering this process with a clear sense of what we'd like to see.

🌟 A Canberra that creates bold new work made by local artists. A city that backs emerging artists with real career pathways and the kind of sustained support that allows talent to stay and grow here.

🌟 A sector that thrives on the connections between young people, independent artists, organisations, and communities.

🌟 A sector where children and young people are treated as cultural changemakers and audiences now β€” because meaningful access to arts and culture in childhood builds community engagement, supports wellbeing, improves educational outcomes, and cultivates lifelong participation.

🌟 And a policy that genuinely rewards creative risk, understanding that the most important cultural conversations often start at the edges.

Those are our hopes. I suspect many of them are yours too β€” and the best thing you can do right now is say so.

'HOP IN!' to an immersive theatre project for young people! 🌟

It’s a new world.
It’s an oversized adventure.
And this time… you’re part of it.

What happens when a gallery becomes a theatre?

Step inside 'Hop In! An Immersive World of Play' at Canberra Museum and Gallery, where giant bunnies, playful spaces and unexpected details come to life, as rooms shift in scale and size. In this new interactive, place-based workshop, young artists will experiment with theatrical form, as they foster essential skills and collaborative attitudes.

Over three days, young people will work with theatre-makers to create an immersive performance, building a world that audiences can walk through, explore, and experience.

As part of the experience, participants will also:

🏠 share their work with an invited audience
🏠 enjoy a backstage tour of Canberra Theatre Centre

Meet our newest Board Members! πŸ‘‹

πŸ’‘ Miriam Covell's passion for storytelling through art and theatre has led to her to work in a variety of administrative and management roles at renowned Australian arts organisations, such as Sydney Theatre Company and Belvoir, where she worked in philanthropic development.

πŸ’‘ Kristy Griffin is dedicated to both the theatre sector and the Canberra region and is an advocate for youth engagement and leadership in the arts. She was previously program leader for Creative Learning & Young Audiences at Canberra Theatre Centre, and is currently the Assistant Director of the National Multicultural Festival.

πŸ’‘ Keya McGeown is an award-winning Legal Counsel at SBS, with experience in media law, intellectual property, and commercial law. She has worked in the Australian screen and media industry for almost a decade. Her work includes the development and implementation of Indigenous cultural frameworks and protocols.

πŸ’‘ Joshua Maxwell is a disabled, non-binary playwright, theatre-maker and arts advocate from the Central Coast, NSW. For over 20 years, they have worked within the Australian arts ecology, contributing to more than 300 projects across community, independent and professional theatre, with a long-standing commitment to youth arts.

These four new fabulous individuals join Peter Hoolihan, Amy Crawford, Louise Davidson, Jolie Baasch, and Emma Macdonald on our Board of Directors.

We say a heartfelt thank you to our outgoing Board Members, Adriana Law and Joanna Erskine. Your contributions were immense, and your expertise invaluable!

Alumni Spotlight πŸ’‘

Guess who's back in town?!

Word on the street is smash-hit satire 'Trophy Boys' is in the midst of taking over the Canberra Theatre Centre. Not ONLY are we stoked because our Young Critics got to attend (stay tuned for those thoughts), but also because it marks a homecoming of former staff member and alumni Marni Mount. The director of this critically acclaimed show, (and the comms person who once penned these social posts) Marni is yet another artist we have the privilege of celebrating as they make art and make waves across Australia!

(You can even swipe through to the end for a sneaky mid-Scratch Marni).

Performed by a female and non-binary cast in drag, 'Trophy Boys' offers a blistering dissection of privilege, power, and the toxic performance of masculinity in an elite private boys' school setting.

If you haven't booked a ticket, this is your sign you should. You have two more nights to catch this crazy, biting, satire in person.

Seriously, we mean it.

This is not a drill. Tonight is your LAST CHANCE to submit an EOI for our ACTORS STUDIO program πŸ’₯

Actors Studio is an intensive 12-week program where emerging actors aged 18–25 develop grounded artistic practice through rigorous, rehearsal-based training. Headed by award-winning director and our Artistic Director Luke Rogers, this is where you’ll develop the standards for preparation and engagement that drama schools and directors look for.

Actors Studio gives you what serious performers need: expert guidance, dedicated practice time, and the artistic experience that creates real growth.

EOIS close tonight. Don't miss out β€” limited to 12 spots only.

Let there be light! πŸ’‘

Our 70+ young artists are currently experiencing the world's speediest tech sessions, and as we do we're making worlds, telling stories, and maybe entering a portal or two...

Our fabulous groups, led by some brilliant emerging artists, will share their new works to adoring audiences in 7pm & 8pm shows.

In these final few hours we're gonna polish some theatre, eat some pizza, and hopefully meet our 12 IN 12 goal of $12k.

Buy (free!) tickets to attend, and donate via the link in our bio.
