What does effective, community-based Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) support look like in practice?

Programs like Uniting NSW.ACT's Medically Supervised Injecting Centre and Uniting Vic.Tas' Catalyst show what works — practical, evidence-based approaches that reduce harm and support people to live and stay well.

Last week, we took these examples to the AOD Inquiry to highlight the real outcomes these services deliver, and why greater investment in community-based care matters.

Hear from Dr Marianne Jauncey and Adrian Webber as they share how these programs work and their life-changing impact.

As extreme weather events intensify due to climate change, so does the pressure on frontline care workers.

Today at Parliament House, the UnitingCare network launched new research highlighting the overlooked human toll of more frequent and more extreme weather events - and that’s the impact on frontline care and community service workers.

Surveying more than 800 workers, it was found that 9 in 10 have been affected by extreme weather in the past five years, causing disrupted access to clients, heavier workloads, and growing pressure on their mental and emotional wellbeing.

These are the people supporting communities through crisis, and they need support too.

We’re calling on the Government to invest in the care economy to strengthen the resilience of our sector and help services adapt to the realities of climate change - because those who care for others must be supported too.

Thank you to Uniting NSW.ACT for leading the report in partnership with 89 Degrees East, and to the UnitingCare network providers for supporting the report and contributing to the research.

Today we appeared at Parliament alongside our network partners, Uniting and Uniting Vic.Tas to call for a better response to Alcohol and Other Drug use (AOD) in Australia.

Our message is clear: we must invest in what works. Right now, fewer than half of people who need treatment can access it — while proven, evidence-based approaches that reduce AOD related harm remain underfunded.

We advocated for a shift towards:
👉 prevention and early intervention
👉 community-based support
👉 compassionate, stigma-free care

Thank you to Dr Marianne Jauncey and Adrian Webber for their leadership in delivering life changing, community-based treatments that improve health and social outcomes through equitable, compassionate, and person-centred care.

It’s been a busy week for the UnitingCare Australia team — swipe for our 2026-27 Budget wrap up.

As the national body representing the UnitingCare network, with 55,000 staff across 20 organisations and 1,600 sites in communities across Australia, the Federal Budget matters as it shapes how essential services are funded and delivered every day in urban, rural and remote areas.

Beyond the Budget, we will continue to work with Government to ensure the voices of providers and the people they support are heard, and that decisions are truly ambitious where it matters most.

This Federal Budget takes some steps forward, but falls short of what’s needed to meaningfully support people and communities under pressure in increasingly tough times.

UnitingCare Australia will continue to advocate for a system that truly supports people and the services they rely on, before more are pushed to the margins.

The 2026–27 Federal Budget is out.

Tonight, Tamara Thomas is speaking to media on what this means for the UnitingCare network and the people behind the numbers. Because every line item represents someone seeking support, and what matters is whether this budget delivers where it’s needed most.

Tomorrow night, the Government will hand down what it’s calling an ambitious Budget.

For us, ambition means real investing in people by strengthening the supports we all rely on when times get tough.

We’ll be at Parliament House on Budget night, ready to share what it means for our network and the communities we serve.

As reforms have placed dignity and rights at the centre of our aged care system there is still more to do to ensure every older person—no matter their income or postcode—can access safe, high‑quality care.

In the lead‑up to the Federal Budget, UnitingCare Australia has called on the Government to fund support for aged care delivery in remote communities and to increase the Aged Care Accommodation Supplement so it reflects the real cost of providing residential care for people of low means.

These investments are essential to stop aged care drifting further into crisis—and to build a system that truly supports older Australians, now and into the future.
