JFA Purple Orange is the social policy agency of the Julia Farr group. Instagram - Why a Purple Orange?

An orange is named for its colour - what you see is what you get. But what if the orange wasn’t orange, but a different colour, say purple? It would make you pause, take a deeper look. It’s the same with people with disability. You need to look beyond what you think you see.

We stand in solidarity with the Human Rights Watch, the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, and all those calling for the basic rights of people with disability in custody to be upheld.

There are few things more basic than access to a toilet and shower that people can use safely and with dignity. Too often, the lack of accessibility, support and reasonable adjustments means people with disability experience the justice system far more harshly than others.

Disabled people have human rights. Governments need to ensure these rights are upheld even when people are incarcerated. Disability Access and Inclusion Plans should be helping to remove barriers, not enabling them to persist.

The new Human Rights Watch report highlights grave abuses that the South Australian Government should urgently act to prevent reoccurring.

The Disability Royal Commission also reported on these types of problems years ago. It's time for action, accountability and real change.

A stronger NDIS starts with listening to people with disability 📣

A few weeks ago, JFA Purple Orange and members of the disability community gave evidence at the NDIS Joint Standing Committee hearing in Adelaide.

One standout moment was the Committee's interest in what genuine co-design is, and how what the Government currently refers to as 'co-design' falls well short of what is needed.

We hope the Committee takes this message back to Parliament and influences the Government to do better.

As concerns about NDIS reforms continue, so does our advocacy.

We're calling for genuine co-design, greater transparency about the impacts of reforms and an NDIS that works for people with disability.

If you're feeling concerned about the NDIS, know that you're not alone. We'll keep advocating alongside the disability community to make sure all voices are heard.

That was the question that changed everything for Michaela, Harry and Jamie.

"Disability arises from widespread barriers that exist in a world not designed to include everyone." 🫳🎤

Our Interim CEO, Tracey Wallace, spoke to the NDIS Joint Standing Committee, raising concerns about the current NDIS reforms and calling for a commitment to transition into a more inclusive and fair future for the NDIS and everyday life.

This is an opportunity for you to deepen your understanding and strengthen your impact in the workplace and everyday life.

Disability Inclusion Training: Next Steps builds on our Foundations training and is designed for people working or volunteering in local councils, community organisations, arts and culture, sport and recreation, emergency services, community health and wellbeing, and other community settings.

This free 90-minute online training will explore intersectionality, practical approaches to allyship, Universal Design and co-design, and ways to create meaningful and sustainable cultural change in your organisation or community.
