Today workers in their unions mark National Sorry Day.

We honour the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and their families. We acknowledge the truth that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly removed from their families, communities, and Country. The ongoing impacts of removal continue to shape health and life outcomes today.

SA Unions stands with the Healing Foundation to amplify this year’s theme, “From Sorry to Action”.

Almost 30 years after the landmark Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament, only five of its 83 recommendations have been fully implemented.

We back the Healing Foundation’s call for immediate, co-ordinated action to meet the outstanding needs of Stolen Generations survivors and their families.

It was brilliant to have Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Amanda Rishworth MP join Safe, Respectful Workplaces training last week, run by our Gender Equality team.

Outdated stereotypes and narrow expectations based on gender hurt all workers.

When workers are equipped with tools to recognise and respond to gendered violence and inequality as critical workplace hazards, we can break down barriers and help build a culture where everyone feels welcome and safe.

The latest private member’s bill from conservative MLC Sarah Game is a direct assault on safe, legal abortion care access.

As the voice for all workers seeking abortion care in SA, SA Unions stress that access to reproductive health services drives gender equality and ensures women’s social, economic, and political equality. Abortion rights are human rights, they are a health care issue that should be between a woman and her medical practitioner.

These restrictions would hit regional and low-income working women the hardest. Politicians should not be able to deny us the healthcare we need.

This is just another example by Game and her former political party One Nation trying to import Trump-style culture wars. We’ve seen what happens overseas when division is allowed to be stoked and inflamed by politicians, and South Australian women won’t stand for it.

Workers need a real pay rise to keep up with the cost of living and catch up after a tough few years.

Real wages in South Australia are still 5.7 per cent lower than they were in March 2021, before the COVID inflation surge.

Now the war in the Middle East is tearing into living standards again. Workers have already taken a hit from soaring fuel prices, which are set to make food and other essentials more expensive in the months ahead.

Workers can’t afford to fall any further behind.

That’s why unions are calling for a 6 per cent increase in the upcoming Annual Wage Review.

A fair increase will directly impact more than 3 million workers who depend on award wages, and will benefit every worker in Australia by setting a decent floor underneath the entire wage system.

Survivors of gender-based violence should be able to access counselling services without fear of the offender having access to those conversations.

But, right now, counselling records are being used in court to re-traumatise, intimidate, and humiliate people who have experienced assault and abuse, both inside and outside the workplace.

If a sexual assault complaint goes to court, defence lawyers can subpoena the victim-survivor's private and confidential counselling files, like written notes, voice recordings, and even video recordings, including from free services like 1800 RESPECT.

Along with Unions NSW, we're campaigning to fix the law to keep confidential records out of the hands of people who use violence and guarantee privacy, dignity, and safety for victim-survivors.

Tickets are still available for the 2026 Terri Daktyl Memorial Dinner.

In addition to our traditional support for APHEDA projects in Vietnam, this year part proceeds raised will support Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA’s global solidarity projects providing emergency humanitarian relief for refugees in Gaza and those displaced in Lebanon.

Ticket sales help provide desperately needed food, blankets, and hygiene products for women, children, and the elderly.

Together, we’ve campaigned hard to make the housing system fairer and more accessible for working South Australians.

Tuesday night’s Federal Budget helps level the playing field by closing loopholes which let investors pay lower rates of tax than workers who earn a wage.

These reforms will deliver important cost-of-living relief and help make home ownership a reality for the next generation of South Australian workers 🏘️

There’s still more to do. We’ll keep pushing for stronger renters’ rights and more public housing to deliver secure, affordable housing for every worker.

Working people have been locked out of housing for too long by tax rules which give a leg up to professional landlords and the uber wealthy.

This Federal budget makes progress on the things working people care about by winding back tax perks that let professional landlords outbid first home buyers.

It cuts tax for workers, with a permanent $250 tax offset, a $1,000 instant deduction, and lower income tax rates.

There's more work to do, but this is a result of the hard work done by union members to advocate and campaign for a system where work matters more than wealth, and where every worker can afford a roof over their heads.
