Cancer Council SA is thrilled to partner with Preventive Health SA to provide a combined $250,000 in grant funding to eight schools and early childhood centres across South Australia, helping them create shaded play areas for children to enjoy at recess and lunch!

We spent a lovely morning at Lake Windemere B-6 School this morning, one of our Shade Grants recipients. Lake Windemere will use its grant to build a vital shade structure as part of a new playground installation later this year.

"This funding does more than build shade – it builds peace of mind for our families, knowing their children have access to high-quality sun protection while enjoying our inclusive outdoor spaces." Lake Windemere School Principal, Michelle Lennox-Pavlovich

Effective shade, combined with best-practice sun protection, is one of the most effective ways to protect children from harmful UV radiation.

With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime, increasing access to shade is an important step in reducing skin cancer risk for future generations.

We're proud to support these schools and early childhood centres in creating safer outdoor environments for their students.

Last week, we were proud to stand alongside the Minister for Health and Wellbeing Blair Boyer as it was announced that South Australia has recorded its lowest daily smoking rates ever 👏

The percentage of South Australians who are smoking daily has reduced from 10.6% in 2020 to now 7.5% in 2025!

While this trend is encouraging, smoking remains one of the leading preventable causes of cancer in our state.

Today is World No To***co Day and this year the theme focuses on ‘unmasking the appeal’, exposing how the to***co and ni****ne industry continues to reinvent and repackage its products to hook children and adolescents.

We are still increasingly concerned about the prevalence of va**ng, particularly among young people. Evidence continues to show that va**ng is not harmless and may act as a gateway to ni****ne addiction.

We also know illicit to***co is a serious issue. With an estimated 40,000 to***co retailers nationwide, Australia now has more to***co shops than supermarkets.

It's fantastic to see smoking rates declining across the state and we are committed to continuing to work with the state government to prevent ni****ne addiction in all its forms.

If you or a loved one is seeking support to quit smoking or va**ng, speak to your local GP or call Quitline on 13 7848. Learn more: https://loom.ly/yMiQmAo

Amy kindly crocheted these adorable octopuses for the families staying with us at Greenhill Lodge while here in the city for cancer treatment.

She shared a special note with our guests, "I made these so families staying here can take one for support, a small companion to bring a little happiness and help you smile on tough or difficult days".

Most of the octopuses in this basket have already found a new home and Amy is busy crocheting more! Thank you so much Amy for this beautiful gesture which has helped spread joy to our guests at Greenhill Lodge 💛

Our staff were honoured to attend Reconciliation SA's 2026 National Reconciliation Week Breakfast yesterday, which is now the largest of its kind in Australia.

Cancer Council SA’s Reconciliation Action Plan Committee Co-Chair, Pat Caruso, and his business We Create were the Principal Sponsor of the breakfast. Pat’s guidance continues to play an important role in our RAP journey.

The event also opened with a Welcome to Country from Uncle Moogy, a valued member of Cancer Council SA's Aboriginal Reference Group.

It is important to us that when developing programs and services for the First Nations community, that they are community led and co-designed to ensure they meet the needs of the community and are culturally safe.

Our Aboriginal Reference Group members are highly regarded within the community and really understand the impact of cancer, whether through their own personal experiences or having worked in the cancer space for many years.

We are proud to work together with members of the First Nations community to continue our work to reduce the rate and impact of cancer for all First Nations people in South Australia.

David's leukaemia diagnosis came completely by chance after seeing his doctor.

A routine blood test found his white blood cell count was elevated and a quick trip to the emergency department confirmed the news that no one wanted to hear. David had acute myeloid leukaemia.

What followed was 14 months away from home and his nine-year-old son to undergo two rounds of chemotherapy and a painful bone marrow transplant.

“Being so far from my son, I missed being part of his life on a day-to-day basis, being there for the questions he might have and those experiences between a father and son. That hit home.” - David

Thankfully, David was declared cancer free earlier this year and was able to return home at long last. Though he still needs to travel to Adelaide for regular check ups, he is grateful he gets to be back with his family.

Leukaemia affects thousands of Australians each year, but cancer research means the chances of surviving have increased to more than 65 per cent in the past 20 years.

For close to 50 years, the Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund has supported 11 talented researchers to find a cure for leukaemia, so more people like David get back to their families sooner.

More and more regional South Australians are reaching out for help as rising costs create a significant barrier for people needing to travel to Adelaide for treatment.

In March alone, our team saw a 200% jump in requests for financial assistance to help with transport and fuel. That's regional people who normally wouldn't ask for help now facing the difficult choice of accessing cancer treatment or doing nothing.

Last year, our generous community helped fund:
💛More than 35,000 nights of accommodation at Greenhill Lodge for regional South Australians to be close to treatment.
💛Nearly 2,500 social work appointments.
💛1,100 counselling sessions.
💛More than 4,500 connections with our 13 11 20 health professionals.

But, as financial pressures rise, so too does the demand to help people in need. From working professionals to retirees, young couples to parents doing everything they can to hold things together - everyone needs support in the face of cancer.

A generous donation this tax time will help make those support services accessible to every South Australian impacted by cancer.

Aaron's decision to chop off his locks was about more than just a haircut. ✂️

With his mum in remission for lymphoma and his dad undergoing treatment for lung, thyroid and brain cancers, Aaron wanted to find a way to use his hair to make an impact and help others like them.

After separate conversations with each parent, both suggested he raise some funds for Cancer Council SA. He signed up to Do It For Cancer, but what he didn't expect was the sheer amount of support he'd find along the way.

💛Within hours of starting his fundraiser, Aaron's goal of raising $1,000 came and went. Before he knew it, he even had his boss committing to match whatever he raised and double his donation.

Sadly, Aaron's dad passed away before he could see the final result, but Aaron knows his dad would be incredibly proud of his efforts.

"We’ve got a massive, really big support group around us. I think we'd raised almost $4,000 before Dad lost his cognitive capacity, but he was so incredibly proud. And so is Mum." - Aaron

All up, Aaron raised an incredible $12,040 to support cancer prevention, research and support services. ✨🎉

Though he's unsure if he'll grow his hair out again, he's looking for other opportunities to support Cancer Council SA in future.

Our cutest Biggest Morning Tea yet! 🐶🧘☕️

Yoga Paws are hosting their very first Biggest Morning Tea this May, with special puppy yoga classes across the weekend!

They are generously donating 10% of all ticket sales for their morning classes this weekend to Cancer Council SA's prevention, research and support services for South Australians impacted by cancer.

Which means these participants will have the opportunity to play with some very cute four-legged friends while supporting a great cause 💛

Thank you to the The Woofery Dog Bakery for baking these adorable pupcakes so the puppies could enjoy morning tea too!

This is a fantastic example of the different ways organisations and community groups can get involved and host a morning tea their own way.

It's not too late to host your own Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, South Australians can host their own event anytime throughout May or June and nearly 1,500 hosts have already signed up!
