Throwback Thursday! 📸

Last month ASU members from across the community and disability sector came together to talk about how their work has changed over time.

Conversations like these helped shape the campaign that has now led to the ASU launching our historic Work Value Case, seeking wage increases of up to 35% for community and disability workers like these.

The experiences shared by members help reinforce a clear message - the work has changed, and it's time that recognition and pay caught up.

Today, we are calling for the 300,000 community and disability workers Australia wide to be paid what we deserve.

We have watched our work change. Become more complex, more demanding, more skilled. But our pay has not kept up.

BIG NEWS FOR COMMUNITY & DISABILITY WORKERS

Today, the ASU has launched a historic Work Value Case for community and disability workers, seeking wage increases of up to 35% for around 300,000 workers across the sector.

For too long, the skill, responsibility, and expertise that workers bring to this essential work every day has been undervalued and underpaid.

This case is about finally ensuring wages reflect the true value of the work that keeps our communities strong.

If you work in the sector, get behind this campaign, talk to your workmates, and make sure your voice is heard.

THIS IS MASSIVE 👇

After a huge campaign by ASU members, the loophole that saw dodgy NDIS providers underclassifying workers and pocketing the difference is closing.

From 1 October, disability support workers will be paid properly, with affected workers receiving pay increases of up to 27% - up to $190 more every week!

This is a huge wage justice win for ASU members in the NDIS.

You took on wage theft, you took on the providers profiting from it, and together we won 💜

Each year, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) undertakes the Annual Wage Review to decide whether the minimum and award wages should be increased. ASU members have been campaigning over many months for a fair increase that keeps up with the cost-of-living.

For the first time since the 1990s, Port Adelaide Enfield Council workers are taking industrial action.

After ASU members rejected the same offer twice, management has responded with a proposal that could allow Council to move employees into entirely different roles across the organisation.

Members say this isn't just about wages. It's about protecting job security, professional expertise and the principle that workers should have a say in their future.

Hear why ASU members are standing together and refusing to back down.

ASU members care deeply about children, families and communities being safe and thriving. That’s why frontline workers across the Northern Territory are speaking out about the NT Government’s proposed child protection reforms.

Members raised serious concerns that the proposed laws will expand intervention and family separation without addressing the underlying drivers of family crisis, including housing insecurity, poverty, trauma and lack of access to support services.

If families are expected to comply with stricter intervention and reunification frameworks, where is the investment in the housing, counselling, rehabilitation and community support services families need to realistically succeed?

Workers also warned that frontline services are already operating beyond capacity after years of underinvestment, workforce shortages and rising demand. Expanding statutory intervention without investing in prevention and early support will not fix the crisis, it will deepen it.

Thank you to all ASU members who shared their experiences, expertise and frontline perspectives. The ASU will continue standing alongside workers and advocating for the services, supports and investment communities need to keep children and families safe.

The Australian Services Union SA + NT has lodged a submission opposing the Northern Territory Government’s proposed Care and Protection of Children Legislation Amendment (Every Child Matters) Bill 2026, warning the reforms risk expanding family separ
