It’s National Reconciliation Week and we were so happy to be part of Voices for Reconciliation along with 41,000 other people singing ‘Beds are Burning’ by Midnight Oil.

Our team was also lucky enough to attend this morning’s sold-out National Reconciliation Week Breakfast hosted by Reconciliation South Australia.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

There are a range of Reconciliation Week community events happening in South Australia - check out the event listing here:

Bonding over a shared the belief that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference,
Pip Lane and Andrew Hunter are using their Sub-Fund at Foundation SA to turn ‘everyday generosity’ into lasting change.

Describing themselves as “ordinary people with no links to the philanthropy world” Pip and Andrew began their structured giving journey with a Gumnut Account. They added to their balance over time until it grew into their own named Sub-Fund, the Better Tomorrow Fund, which supports educational opportunities for First Nations women.

Andrew says that the behind-the-scenes support from the team of philanthropy professionals at Foundation SA team has been invaluable.

“I can’t downplay the logistical benefits,” he says, “the support of the Foundation SA team is super helpful. For Pip and I, knowing that the administration and the due diligence and everything else is covered and running professionally in the background is so reassuring.”

SA Giving Week begins today! We’re so excited to be part of a week that celebrates and encourages local generosity. 🌱

There’s sometimes a misperception that you need millions of dollars to make a difference, but at Foundation SA we know that’s not true.

There are giving options for every situation, whether you’d like to open a Sub-fund of your own or start a Gumnut account with $2,000, give collectively as much or as little as you like to a themed fund like our Neighbourhood Grants or SA Climate & Nature Fund, or participate at a level that suits you with a Giving Circle like Women for Women.

We hope that the events taking place this week help more South Australians learn about the many opportunities for contributing to positive change.

Our inaugural Chair, Jennifer Duncan, is a passionate community advocate who was drawn to the community-led nature of Foundation SA’s work and its unique role as connector, convener and educator.

“I’m passionate about changing systems so that they are fairer and more equitable,” Jennifer says, “and it’s extraordinarily important for people to have agency in the things that affect their lives."

Foundation SA is entering a new era of growth and independence with the installation of our inaugural Board and the roll out of our latest five-year strategy.

With the transition successfully underway to bring all governance and administrative functions to Adelaide, Foundation SA CEO Sophie Doyle says the foundation is ready to step into self-determination.

“Thanks to the support we’ve received over the last five years from our implementation partner and trustee, Australian Communities Foundation, we’re in a very strong position to make the transition to independence. The time is right to make the change with our new five-year strategy setting out the blueprint for the next chapter of our growth and impact as a statewide community foundation.”

Women are powerful change makers and this International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the amazing women who are fund holders, donors, grant partners and supporters of the Foundation SA giving community.

Their contributions, large and small, are creating positive change for our communities now and into the future. Some of these inspiring women have created legacy gifts through bequests, others have established their own sub funds or are giving collectively through SA Women for for Women.

When women and girls stand equal, families are stronger, workplaces are fairer, communities thrive, and society becomes safer for everyone.

We are excited to announce that along with 33 of our community foundation colleagues, Foundation SA has today received Ministerial declaration from the Hon Andrew Leigh MP, under the Community Charity Guidelines as an Item 1 Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR1) Community Charity.

This is an important milestone for us on our journey to independence and opens up new avenues and opportunities for more giving in South Australia.

Not only will Foundation SA be able to accept donations from private ancillary funds (PAFs), we will also have a broader range of charitable organisations we can grant to.

As our former CEO and current Community Foundations Australia Chair Stacey Thomas said of today’s announcement, the community charity model makes it simpler and more accessible for local people to establish and govern their own foundation:

“For more than two decades, the movement worked towards a framework that properly recognises community-led stewardship of local resources. The 33 declarations today show that communities across Australia were ready.”

Thank you to Community Foundations Australia and Philanthropy for championing these important reforms, to our Board for all their support, and to all our friends and supporters who made this possible, including Paul Ingram at Minter Ellison for the pro-bono legal support.
