George SPCA - Garden Route

George SPCA - Garden Route Garden Route SPCA - George and Mossel Bay is a registered-nonprofit and public benefit-organisation. Together, we protect the voiceless.

Founded in 1949, the Garden Route SPCA has grown from a small George branch into one of South Africa’s largest SPCAs, protecting animals from Mossel Bay to Oudtshoorn. We rescue, treat, sterilise, educate, and enforce the law — stepping in where no one else can when animals suffer. It costs over R1.5 million every month to keep this lifesaving work going. We’re here for the animals because the com

Sheila was being sold at a traffic light like she was an object, not a living being.

Let’s be very clear: selling animals on the roadside is against the by-laws. Law Enforcement will act, and the SPCA will step in immediately if there’s any welfare concern.

It’s not just wrong — it’s irresponsible. We’re asking the public to stop supporting this behaviour. Don’t shop. Adopt.

There is no moral difference between a “pure breed” and the incredible dogs waiting at the SPCA. And instead of paying ridiculous prices, you could save two lives:
• the animal you adopt
• and the animal who finally gets a space in the kennel they leave behind

If you care about animals, please don’t fund breeding or roadside sales. Choose adoption and make a real impact.

We’re determined to make our SPCA’s cat areas feel as homely and comforting as possible. Our cats have couches to curl up on, climbing towers to explore, toys to keep them busy, and a team of staff who pop in throughout the day to give them love and attention.

But it can always be better — and that’s where you come in.

Our cats need people. Real interactions. Different voices, different hands, different personalities. It builds their confidence, makes them happier, and helps them adjust far more easily when they finally find their forever homes.

If you have a spare moment in your day, come sit with them anytime during our opening hours. Play with them. Let them climb into your lap and soak up the affection.

BLACK FRIDAY BUT MAKE IT RESCUE.

Black pets are overlooked year after year because of old myths and tired superstitions. None of it is real, yet they’re the ones who stay in kennels the longest. In truth, they’re affectionate, loyal and absolutely stunning — they’ve just been ignored for reasons that make no sense.

This Black Friday, skip the sales and change a life instead. Give a black cat or dog the home they’ve been waiting far too long for.

Let Black Friday be the day you choose love over shopping.

Meet Max and Marshall who would love to have a home just as much as any other dog out there.

Meet Daphne, our bookkeeper.

She has a real soft spot for our animals (definitely mostly the cats though) and she never limits herself to her own department. When our charity shop needed an upgrade, she stepped in and made sure everything was ready for the grand opening.

Thank you, Daphne, for your steady dedication and for helping wherever you’re needed.

Thank you so much to Dotsure.co.za for joining us on Beard Day.
You helped us power through a ton of important maintenance tasks — the kind of jobs that keep the wheels turning while we focus on the animals.

Your energy, teamwork and genuine love for our SPCA made the day feel effortless.
Truly one of the best donors (and insurance companies) we could ever ask for.

Our Story

The Garden Route SPCA is in George and Mossel Bay. It has professionally supervised boarding kennels, and a host of pets awaiting adoption by loving families. Our vision is that one day the Garden Route communities will LEAD South Africa in their care and respect of animals – in homes, on farms and in the wild. We constantly inspect facilities that keep animals: from abattoirs to sale yards, pet shops to security companies, to ensure animals are receiving proper care - and we take action where standards are not met! Should we find cases of dog-fighting, animal cruelty or animal abuse, we keenly prosecute the perpetrators through the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. Our SPCA inspectors and Educational team are also active in educating owners about animal care. We visit schools and we have a network of neighbourhood educational sessions through our unique 'Community Carers' outreach programme. One of our biggest challenges is to motivate dog and cat owners to sterilize their animals. Unfortunately, the current oversupply of puppies and kittens means that sick, old or unwanted animals are being abandoned to die of starvation. These neglected animals spread disease and worms – not only to other animals but to vunerable children playing in the same dirt.
