In July 2021, CREMHOG received confirmation from George Municipality that land has been made available for the construction of a “House of Hope” for the Homeless. The aim of the Centre is to each year take in between 48 and 72 homeless men and women and socially rehabilitate them from street living within six months. The NG George Bergsigcongregation supports CREMHOG’s food ministry with the daily
provision of food and bread to 55 or more homeless and unemployed people in George. Every Thursday, congregants provide 40 litres of soup which is dispensed from a kiosk in St. CREMHOG’s other seven partners also provide food for the other days - from Mondays to Fridays as well as Sundays. CREMHOG’s vision for the new Centre includes the following:
Provide accommodation for six months
Make available ablution facilities for personal hygiene
Supply two to three meals per day
Provide social support and counselling services
Allot daily tasks to each resident
Train and equip each individual to become economically self-sufficient
Implement programmes to hone life skills and work preparedness (through Work4Living)
Establish arts and crafts initiatives and vegetable gardens
Provide spiritual care, pastoral guidance and discipleship. During each resident’s six month stay, we will conduct a full assessment of his/her life and circumstances, and design and implement a personal ‘exit’ plan to enable him/her to stand on their own feet when they leave the Centre. In 2012, CREMHOG established an Article 21 NPO in order to facilitate the management of funds and establish a legal entity which can negotiate with the local
authority and other NGOs to acquire property for the provision of safe shelter for the homeless. CREMHOG is also able to issue Article 18A tax certificates for donations and bequests.
