Recovery opens a window.
It doesn't happen all at once. But bit by bit, the air starts to change. Colors look a little different. Food tastes like something again. A conversation with someone you trust feels like breathing room. These are not coincidences. These are signs that you are returning to yourself.

There is a moment that many people in recovery describe, though they use different words for it. It might happen on an ordinary morningโ€ฆstepping outside, feeling the sun, noticing the air on your skin.

Just like a cluttered closet, our minds can fill up with things we've been meaning to deal with: shame we haven't processed, resentments we haven't released, or old versions of ourselves we keep dragging into the present. Mental spring cleaning is about noticing what's taking up space and gently choosing what stays.

Four things worth clearing out this season:

1. Guilt and shame from the past. Guilt says "I did something bad." Shame says "I am bad." Recovery helps us learn the difference, and stop letting past mistakes define who we are today. You are not your worst moment.

2. Relationships that drain you. Not every person from your past belongs in your future. It's okay (and sometimes necessary) to create distance from people who pull you back toward old patterns.

3. Negative self-talk. The voice that says you're not trying hard enough, not progressing fast enough, not enough periodโ€ฆthat voice deserves to go to the curb. Recovery isn't a race, and you are worthy exactly as you are right now.

4. The pressure to be "fixed." Healing isn't linear. Letting go of the idea that you should be further along is one of the most freeing things you can do.

Letting go doesn't mean forgetting. It means choosing not to let something have power over your present moment anymore.

Spring is arriving, and with it comes something powerful: more light. For anyone walking the road of recovery, this shift in seasons isn't just a welcome change in weather. There's real science behind why longer, sunnier days can make a meaningful difference in how you feel, how you cope, and how you heal.

Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, focus, and feelings of calm. Low serotonin levels are closely linked to depression and anxiety โ€” two of the most common challenges in early recovery. Simply getting outside in the morning can give your brain a natural, healthy boost it may have been deprived of for a long time.
