To round out our week of 4-H club spotlights, we're going to close this week by highlighting our Shooting Education 4-H Club! Take a look at what these active 4-H'ers have to say about their experience with this club.

"The Frederick County 4-H Shooting Education Club has helped me work towards becoming a better leader and citizen to my community. I have developed new skills through this club and am so grateful for the experience. The public speaking opportunities have helped me develop a lot more confidence in myself, especially when standing up and speaking in front of crowds. I love all the community service opportunities this club has offered and do my best to participate in as many as I can. We fundraise as a club to allow our members to participate at lower costs. There are so many different disciplines you can choose from in the Shooting Education Club. I currently shoot Air Pistol and am interested in shooting trap and s***t with sh***un and archery. This club has helped me grow in ways I didn’t know I could. I am grateful for every experience and friendship that I have been blessed with through this club and 4-H." - Kaycee Ruckman, Age 13, Historian

"Hello! My name is Lukas Ferrell, and I am a member of the Frederick County 4-H Shooting Education Club. This is the beginning of my 5th year in 4-H. I started out as a member of the Livestock Club thinking that I would be showing livestock at the Frederick County Fair. But then I was told about the shooting club and as I like to hunt and like the outdoors, I decided to give up livestock and stick with the shooting club

I have been the treasurer of our club for 3 years now. Two years ago, at state competition, I was accepted as a State Ambassador. Being an officer for the club and a State Shooting Ambassador has helped me with my presentation and public speaking skills and has helped me get over my fright of talking in front of people.

I am currently getting ready to apply for the chance to become an All Star. I hope that my experiences over the last 4 years within the club and in competitions will help me to become an All Star.

I have competed a lot the last 4 years. I’ve competed on a local level, district level, state level, and national level. I’ve made new friends, learned new skills and gained more responsibility. I’ve also earned numerous awards along the way and every year I’m in the club my skills get better. 4-H has given me many opportunities and has made a huge impact in my life skills. I’m excited to see where this next new year takes me." - Lukas Ferrell, Age 15, Treasurer

For today’s Club Spotlight, we’re excited to introduce our BRAND NEW 4-H Club! πŸŽ‰

Please help us welcome the Home & Harvest 4-H Club, led by Kristin Tesdall and Candace DeLong. We are thrilled to have this new club joining the Frederick County 4-H family and can't wait to see it grow.

Check out this special message from Kristin as she shares her vision and hopes for the club! πŸŒ±πŸ‘πŸ’š

The Home and Harvest 4-H Club is dedicated to providing youth with educational opportunities and experiences in practical skills for home, farm, and community life. Club members will enjoy learning through guest speakers, field trips, and hands-on activities related to gardening, animal care, cooking, homemaking, and traditional skills. Our mission is to cultivate capable youth who understand the value of stewardship, service, and self-reliance.

As club leader, I hope to encourage confidence and responsibility in club members with opportunities to learn traditional life skills, like food and pollinator gardening, handicrafts, food preservation, animal husbandry, scratch cooking, and more. We'll learn from community experts in farming and homesteading, and participate in hands-on, skill-building projects focused on lost arts and self-sufficiency. My goal is to help kids find the beauty and importance of timeless skills that aren't often prioritized today.

"I have been in 4-H quite awhile and what a journey it has been. 4-H has changed me in so many ways for the good, I used to be real quiet and not the person I am now, but public speaking and taking on roles in the club has definitely given me more confidence. Also it is very fun to participate in horse judging and Hippology with the club, we travel all throughout Virginia during the fall and winter and when we’re not traveling we’re studying and going to different farms to learn more about horses. After that in the spring and summer kids that have horses are practicing non stop to be the best they can be for the upcoming horse show season and later in the year, the state 4-H Horse Show. We also hold fundraisers to pay for all the expenses, so everyone is able to participate in about anything with not much cost at all! I am so glad I joined Golden Horseshoe 4-H. It has taught me so much about the person I am and I have gained so many friendships throughout my time in 4-H. " - Savannah Boczar, President of Golden Horseshoe 4-H Club

"I joined the Golden Horseshoe 4-H club a year ago. Since then I have improved my knowledge of horses, as well as my public speaking and leadership skills! Though I have not been in the club for very long, I have enjoyed all the special things I’ve gotten to do because of this club and its leaders. I am on the 2026 Virginia State Horsebowl Team and have gotten the opportunity to travel to many different states with my team. In July, we went to Southern Regionals in Perry, Georgia. We had a great time and placed third! In October, we will be going to Ohio for Quarter Horse Congress and in November we will go to Louisville, Kentucky for Eastern Nationals! I am extremely excited and grateful for these upcoming trips and to our Horse bowl coach, Hannah McDonald, for all that she has taught me in such a short time! Because of the club, I also got the chance to show at the Virginia State Horse Show a few weeks ago! I am very grateful for all this club does for kids in 4-H and can’t wait to see what the new year holds!" - Sidney Ehman, Treasurer of Golden Horse 4-H Club.

Next up on our club spotlight is our Livestock 4-H Club!

The Frederick County 4-H Livestock Club provides hands-on learning opportunities focused on beef, swine, goat, and sheep projects, helping members develop animal care, management, and showmanship skills. The club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., with meeting locations varying throughout the year. Through educational activities, demonstrations, and project-based experiences, members gain practical knowledge while building leadership, responsibility, and teamwork skills. They coordinate the spring beef show and assist with lamb and goat camp. In addition to livestock education, the club actively participates in community service projects, encouraging youth to give back and make a positive impact in their communities. Whether you are new to livestock or have years of experience, we welcome youth of all backgrounds and skill levels to join us, learn, make friends, and grow through the many opportunities 4-H has to offer.

It's National 4-H Week! πŸ€

What better time to shine a spotlight on our amazing Frederick County 4-H clubs? Throughout the week, we'll be featuring a different club each day, so be sure to follow along and learn more about the opportunities available through 4-H.

See a club you'd like to join? Give the Extension Office a call at 540-665-5699, and we'll help connect you with the club leader.

To kick off the week, we're excited to highlight the Hoof-Hearted 4-H Club! πŸ’š

Learning, exploring, serving, and having a whole lot of fun along the way! Hoof Hearted 4-H Club is an agriculture-focused club, with about 30 members regularly joining us for our first-Saturday-of-the-month meetings.

Our goal is simple: expose kids to all things agriculture! We believe the best way to learn is by getting out there and doing it. We take field trips and tours to local farms and agricultural businesses and participate in hands-on activities that introduce them to the many different sides of agriculture. We've tried our hand at blacksmithing, apple c***r making, Christmas Caroling, we have visited a fish hatchery and an active dairy farm, we learned where our food and meat come from, made bird feeders, and so much more!

We also believe in giving back to our community. Our members participate in bake sales, help create and maintain the many flower beds at the Frederick County Fair, and proudly take part in Wreaths Across America each December.

For our animal-loving members, about 15 club members show livestock and other animals at the Frederick County Fair. Along the way, they learn responsibility, animal care, record keeping, sportsmanship, and the pride that comes from seeing a project through from start to finish.

Whether you're on a farm, in your own backyard, at the fair, getting your hands dirty with a new project, or serving our community, Hoof Hearted 4-H is all about giving kids opportunities to learn, try something new, make memories, and discover just how big the world of agriculture really is!

πŸŽ‰ It’s officially National 4-H Week! πŸŽ‰

To kick off the celebration, today is Virginia Kick-Off Day | My 4-H Story Begins Here. Take a few minutes to read the story we're sharing today, and then tell us your story in the comments!

To start our week of National 4-H Week posts, we're sharing the very own 4-H story of our Frederick County 4-H Agent:

"I joined 4-H when I was 13 years old. I was a horse-crazy teen, and 4-H gave me the opportunity to be around other horse-crazy kids and teens. Little did I know at the time just how much 4-H would shape my life.

I grew up in Loudoun County, Virginia, and was a member of the Canterlopes 4-H Horse Club, which is still active today! Some of my very best friends came from my journey in 4-H. I'll admit, when I first got involved, I thought 4-H was only for kids interested in livestock, horses, or farming in some way. As I grew older, however, I began to realize there was so much more to 4-H.

Around age 16, I joined the Loudoun County 4-H Teen Leaders Council and had an incredible experience. I learned new ways to give back to my community and met people from across the county whom I may never have met otherwise.

Fast forward a few years to college, when I had the opportunity to intern with Virginia Cooperative Extension in Frederick County. My eyes were opened to a whole new world. It was there that I learned so much about Extension and 4-H, and that experience helped shape both who I am and the career path I chose. I truly credit 4-H with helping me develop many of the life skills that have brought me to where I am today. As I like to tell people, I bleed green, and I am proud of it!" -Michelle Van Ness, Frederick County 4-H Extension Agent

πŸ‘‹ Check out Megan’s introduction below and help us give her a warm Frederick County 4-H welcome! πŸ€

β€œHi all! I am so excited to be joining the Frederick County Extension team!

I’m originally from Madison, VA, and recently graduated from Virginia Tech this past spring with a bachelor’s in animal science. My connection to Extension and 4-H goes way back β€” I grew up in the Madison County 4-H program and was very active throughout my childhood. I participated in livestock projects, Food Challenge, and, of course, my favorite β€” 4-H Camp! Some of my favorite memories and experiences came from 4-H, and I’m so excited to now have the opportunity to give back to a program that has played such an important role in my life.

I can’t wait to meet everyone in Frederick County!”

Today marks the end of an era for Frederick County 4-H. After 30 years of service to our program, Tammy Epperson is retiring.

Tammy has poured her heart and soul into Frederick County 4-H, and she is going to be deeply missed. Ask anyone in our community about 4-H in Frederick County, and you will undoubtedly hear Tammy's name. Through her 4-H Garden, school enrichment programs, and countless other initiatives, she has been the backbone of this program for many years. There were even times when Tammy was carrying the program forward almost entirely on her own while we were without a 4-H Agent.

Thank you, Tammy, for 30 incredible years of dedication to the youth of Wi******er and Frederick County, Virginia. Your impact on generations of young people and families will be felt for years to come. You will be deeply missed, and we wish you all the best in your retirement! πŸ€πŸ’š
