Today our hearts were broken as we learned of the sudden passing of our friend and local artist Eugene Smith. The Wi******er community has lost a special talent, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.

Through his art, Eugene captured the beauty and character of the place we call home, leaving a lasting impression on the community he was part of. His work reminds us that art is more than what we see on a canvas—it is a way of preserving memories, celebrating the places we love, and connecting people through a shared sense of belonging.

At United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, we know that the strength of our community lies in the people who make it special. Eugene’s artistic contributions are a reminder of the many ways individuals enrich our lives and leave their mark on the place they call home.

As we reflect on his life and legacy, we hold his loved ones in our thoughts and hope they find comfort in the memories, beauty, and inspiration he leaves behind.

May his art continue to tell the story of our community for generations to come.

Day 15 — Until Next Year
THANK YOU for BEING THE MISSING PIECE

Fifteen days of gratitude could never fully capture everything that happened on September 18.

But we hope these posts have reminded you of the incredible people, organizations and businesses that came together for United Way NSV's Day of Caring.

To our sponsors: thank you for investing.

To our volunteer teams: thank you for showing up.

To our project sites: thank you for welcoming us.

To our community partners: thank you for helping make it happen.

And to every individual who gave even a few hours of your time:

Thank you for proving what is possible when we come together.

Day of Caring may be one day on the calendar, but the impact continues long after the work is done.

Here's to the projects completed, the partnerships strengthened, the friendships made and the community we're building together.

United is the Way to completing the puzzle.

See you at Day of Caring 2027! Want to get on the list? Send us a message and let's connect!

Day of Caring was a beautiful reminder of what happens when people come together as the missing piece with a shared purpose.

Sometimes making a difference starts with something as simple as showing up.

On September 18, hundreds of people showed up.

They showed up for local nonprofits.
They showed up for their coworkers.
They showed up for their neighbors.
They showed up for a community they care about.

And because you showed up, projects got completed, spaces were improved, organizations received a helping hand, and connections were made.

But perhaps most importantly, you reminded us that community isn't just a place — it's people coming together for one another.

To every sponsor, volunteer, project site, team leader and community partner who helped make United Way NSV's Day of Caring possible:

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for serving. Thank you for being the missing piece. And thank you for caring.

We're incredibly grateful for each and every one of you.

Day of Caring is a true team effort to assist in completing the puzzle.

It takes sponsors.

It takes project sites.

It takes volunteer teams.

It takes team leaders.

It takes planning.

It takes community partners.

And it takes hundreds of people willing to say, "Count me in."

To everyone who played a role in September 18 — whether your contribution was big, small, financial, physical, logistical or simply encouraging someone else to volunteer:

THANK YOU.

You helped create a day that brought people together and reminded us just how much we can accomplish when we work as one community.

A freshly painted room.

A cleaned-up garden.

An organized storage area.

A repaired space.

A cleared trail.

A job finally checked off the list.

Each project might seem small on its own, but is a missing piece to the larger puzzle.

But put hundreds of projects, hundreds of volunteers and dozens of community organizations together — and you get something much bigger.

You get community impact.

Thank you to everyone who helped turn "we need to get this done" into "look what we accomplished!"

That's the magic of Day of Caring.

To the nonprofits and community organizations that work every day to serve our neighbors:

This one's for you.

Day of Caring gives us a chance to shine a little extra light on the incredible work happening throughout the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

You are caring for children and families. Supporting seniors. Helping neighbors find stability. Protecting animals. Providing food and shelter. Creating opportunities. Strengthening our communities.

And on September 18, hundreds of volunteers got the opportunity to stand beside you and say:

"We're here to help, We want to Be the Missing Piece."

Thank you for the work you do every day — and thank you for welcoming us into your missions for Day of Caring.

One of the best things about Day of Caring?

Everyone has something to contribute.

Some people bring construction skills.

Some bring gardening know-how.

Some are great organizers.

Some know how to paint.

Some bring muscle.

Some bring creativity.

And some simply bring a willingness to say, "Put me to work!"

That mix of skills is what makes Day of Caring so powerful.

Thank you to every volunteer who brought your particular talent — or simply your two willing hands — to a project on September 18.

Today we're celebrating the businesses that encourage their employees to give back together.

Day of Caring is a wonderful reminder that a workplace can be more than a place where people work. It can be a place where people build community.

To every local employer that said, "Yes, our team will volunteer to be a piece of the puzzle," thank you.

You gave your employees the opportunity to step away from their desks, work alongside their coworkers and make a difference for a local organization.

Thank you for making community service part of your culture — and for helping your employees Live United.

Want to be part of - send us a message and let's connect!

Every Day of Caring project has a story.

There's the person who submitted the project request.

The staff member who prepared the site.

The team leader who organized the volunteers.

The employee who convinced coworkers to participate.

The volunteer who brought the extra energy.

And the person who stayed late to make sure all the pieces were put together.

Today, we're thanking all of the people behind the scenes who made September 18 possible.

So much work happens before, during and after Day of Caring — and we're grateful for every single person who helped make the day run smoothly.

It truly takes a community.
