Wi******er Area SPCA
WASPCA Mission: to strengthen the human-animal bond and safeguard animals in transition. To fulfill our mission, we will follow these Guiding Principles:
• We will practice compassion for animal caregivers.
• We will be a progressive community-based animal intervention and education center.
• We will be an interactive center employing non-traditional means to involve the c
ommunity. To honor our mission and our guiding principles we have created the following program goals:
1. Continue to provide safe temporary shelter for animals in transition and maintain the distinction of being a no kill facility.
2. Develop and maintain lifesaving programs to increase the WASPCA’s impact on the community.
3. Develop and maintain programs to monitor and improve the WASPCA’s customer service provision and community perception.
4. Develop and maintain policies that reflect best practices in both human resources and animal shelter operating procedures.
5. Develop and maintain a financial plan that ensures resources are available to support the mission, vision, guiding principles, and program goals of the WASPCA. What is a ‘no-kill’ animal shelter? A “no-kill” shelter is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals. They reserve euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety. A no-kill shelter is a facility with a 90 percent or better “live release rate”. Is the Wi******er Area SPCA a no kill facility? Yes, in 2012 the WASPCA made a public declaration and announced their commitment to save the life of every adoptable animal. By 2014, they saved 90% of the animals entrusted to their care. Today, those lifesaving efforts continue. In 2021, the shelter ended the calendar year with a 99% live release rate. This WASPCA has been a no kill facility since 2012. Admissions:
Stray dogs found within the city limits of Wi******er are welcome. Tuesday - Friday 10 AM -4 PM
Saturday and Sunday 12 PM - 4 PM by appointment
On Monday's the campus is closed but you may contact your local animal control for assistance.
1) The WSPCA accepts owned animals from residents of Wi******er City (zip code 22601) by appointment. When our shelter is full it means that there are no available kennels. We believe pets deserve a safe place to stay while they wait for a new home. Owners help us to save lives by waiting. While owners wait, we help them work with their pet on behavior problems and reach out to their own support network for re-homing options. We understand that every situation is unique and will always take a dog or cat if it is in immediate need or danger. We are slowing down our intake process so it is more manageable for our facility. We hope to become a resource for our community, and not a dumping ground. As the contracted public shelter for Wi******er City, we are saving more lives so the WASPCA can continue to be a no kill facility and the City of Wi******er can be a no kill community.
2) The WASPCA does not accept healthy stray cats. If the stray cat is healthy we ask you to wait. Many stray cats are actually owned indoor/outdoor cats and will eventually make their way home. A cat has a much better chance of being reunited with its owner if it isn’t brought into the shelter. Less than 1% of stray cats brought to shelters are reclaimed. We want to give all community kitties a chance to find their way back home. We know that the community wants the same thing. Thank you for helping make the WASPCA a safe place for cats to stay while they wait for their forever home.
3) Of course, we will always accept any domestic animal that is injured or ill. Please call us at 540-662-8616 to speak with one of our representatives. The Wi******er Area SPCA also has a thrift shop. We welcome your gently used items to be donated. The thrift shop is located at 1944 Abrams Creek, beside the WASPCA adoption center. Please call them at 540-450-2710 or check out their page at http://www.facebook.com/spcathriftshop
