Winchester Area Temporary Transitional Shelter

Breaking the cycle of homelessness one life at a time; providing temporary shelter in extreme weather WATTS is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

WATTS is a low-barrier, non-profit homeless shelter based in Wi******er, VA. Established in November 2009, we serve any homeless individual (our "guests") age 18 or over without regard to sobriety, identification, criminal background, etc. We partner with local churches and other host locations to offer 20 weeks of temporary overnight shelter from November - March each year. In 2020, we began offe

ring a daytime Warming Center from December - March, a place for homeless individuals to come in during the day for drinks, snacks, a restroom, and connection with other needed resources. Likewise, we established our daytime Cooling Center in the summer of 2021, which operates during July & August each year. Also in 2021, we established our Transition Out of Homelessness program, which employs year-round staff who assist our guests with overcoming barriers keeping them in a cycle of homelessness (such as obtaining birth certificates and ID, applying for jobs and benefits, assistance with housing forms and Centralized Intake, information and placement for rehabilitative services, medical advocacy, and so much more.) Many WATTS guests were born right here in Wi******er, or the surrounding counties (Frederick in Virginia, Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah, or Berkeley and Jefferson in West Virginia.) WATTS operates by the generosity of many caring individuals, churches, businesses, foundations, community organizations and more, who donate needed items, their time, buildings, gifts and talents, monetary donations and beyond! Community support and successful fundraising efforts are helping us work towards our long-range goal of a permanent building that would allow us to serve homeless individuals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

WATTS' Thanksgiving hosting week is just about 1 week away, beginning on Saturday, November 22 and going through Saturday, November 29. When WATTS is the "host," anyone from the community who has been wanting to volunteer and get involved with WATTS is invited to join us! It's a great time to jump on board with helping the homeless 💜

We still need lots of volunteers for the week, everything from Saturday setup (under 18 are welcome to help with this volunteer spot), to registration/intake, dinner or breakfast volunteers, donate meals, and more! Check out our Signup Genius for available dates/times and serve those who are experiencing homelessness over the holidays!

Have any friends in Shenandoah County? Let them know too because we'll be based at Strasburg United Methodist Church for the week, so it'll be close by for them!

Some photos from our 1st ever grilled cheese & tomato soup extravaganza "Cheesin' for a Reason" 2025 this past Saturday! We had such a blast and the weather couldn't have been better 🌤️🍂 The participating restaurants brought their A-game, serving up all sorts of grilled cheese & tomato soup creations that attendees were able to vote for (voting results coming soon!) 🤤 Kids had fun under the beautiful balloon arch by Luitcrafts with magician Kevin Owens, face painting with Michele, and caricatures by Scott, plus a scavenger hunt in some of the downtown shops (they loved finding the 💩 s from Title Sponsor, Johnny Blue Inc.!) We had some great vendors selling all sorts of gifts and treasures, and the music throughout the day (thanks Ryan Jewel Music and Raised on Analog!) was enjoyed by all 💜 Mayor Les and his wife Sabra Veach were crowned the Cheesin' King & Queen and took pics and selfies with everyone for added fun 🧀🍅 Great big thanks to Grand Event Center for all the equipment we needed for this event and getting us set up/torn down like the pros that they are! 🙌

SO many hands played a part in making this such a fantastic day and we cannot thank everyone enough - WATTS Board, all our generous sponsors, amazing volunteers, everyone who bought tickets to attend or donated - this day truly wasn't possible without YOU! You heard all about our Cheesin' event last week, but the real mission was happening over at Stephens City United Methodist Church each night with the first week of our Overnight Shelter season! The folks at SCUMC gave the warmest welcome to our guests with their beautiful hearts & smiles, amazing meals & desserts, a clothing room and toiletries offered, nurses each night, the BEST welcome snacks, and so much more! SO many church members and groups were all involved in making it a great week, as well as many outside volunteers who joined them. Friends, we are immensely grateful for the amazing ways in which you provide and serve - THANK YOU for such gracious hosting of our guests last week in your church 💜🙏

🎶Next Sunday 11/16! The Wi******er Chapter of the AGO presents a Thanksgiving Benefit Concert for ******erVA and Wi******er Rescue Mission! 🥰🎶 Featuring performances on organ, oboe, trumpet, piano, flute, cello, clarinet, harp, and more, it will be an afternoon of beautiful music for a great cause. The concert will be held at one of our partner churches, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 3:00 PM next Sunday 11/16 - free admission, but donations via a free-will offering will be taken up.

We're so grateful to be a beneficiary of your outstanding and wonderful concert again this year, friends; thank you so much!! 💜🙏
