Antietam National Battlefield (144 miles, 3 hours 45 minutes roundtrip) Scenic route through the backroads of Virigina, West Virginia, and Maryland to the location known for being “The Bloodies Day in American History” – Antietam National Battlefield. 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Amry of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led President Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Stop by the Visitor’s Center/Museum for historic artifacts, movie, hands-on-exhibits, exhibit panels, and maps. Entrance fees are required if you plan to ride through the Battlefield. Passes can be purchased at the Visitor Center upon arrival. America the Beautiful – National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Pass is accepted. After the Battlefield, plan to have lunch at a local, family friendly venue and Maryland landmark, that has served homecooked family favorites since 1958 – Bonnie’s at the Red Byrd.

Apple Donut Loop (96 miles, 2 hours 22 minutes, roundtrip) Rolling out of Wi******er, you will head into open farmland toward Marker-Miller Orchards, where the highlight is freshly made Apple Cider donuts. From there, the ride continues along scenic backroads to Woodbine Farm Market, offering a relaxed stop with local goods and a chance to stretch your legs. Next you'll reach The Apple House, a longtime roadside favorite known for its cozy atmosphere and classic treat, including their famous Apple Butter donuts. The route then carries you into the foothills toward Red Truck Rural Bakery, who offer a variety of muffins and other baked goods. Looping back north toward Wi******er, the return leg blends gentle curves with open stretches.

Belle Grove Plantation (49 miles roundtrip, 1 hour 11 minutes) Leisurely ride through the northern Shenandoah Valley to a historical site near Middletown – Belle Grove Plantation. Home to Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Madison Hite, sister of President James Madison, this Plantation used enslaved labor to expand from 483 acres to a prosperous 7500 acres growing wheat, raising livestock and operating a large distillery and several mills, in the late 1700s. As one of the outstanding historic mansions of the Shenandoah Valley, the grand mansion - Belle Grove Manor House, was built with limestone quarried from the property, and faced the Valley Pike to display the owners’ social and financial status. Occupied several times during the Civil War, most notably by Union General Philip Sheridan, Belle Grove found itself in the center of the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. Guided tours of Manor House are Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm, and typically last one hour. Cost per person: Adults-$15; National Park Service Pass/Seniors/AAA/Military-$14. Visitors may also enjoy a complimentary, self-guided tour of the historic landscape and garden along with the Museum Shop during open hours. Parking lot is hard-packed gravel.

Berkeley Springs (123 miles, 2 hours 28 minutes, roundtrip) Schedule a spa day! This ride offers a perfect mix of curves, elevation, and peaceful scenery. Heading out through Hedgesville on scenic backroads, the ride quickly trades traffic for rolling countryside and wooded stretches that feel made for a bike. Crossing into Berkeley Springs, a stop at Berkeley Springs State Park provides a relaxing break with its historic charm and natural springs. Schedule a massage at one of the spas, take a bath in the Old Roman Bathhouse, or just dip your toes in the spring water that flow at a constant temperature of 74.3 degrees. From there, climbing up to Prospect Peak Overlook rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys—an ideal spot to pause and take it all in. The return leg along Cacapon Road brings a different flavor, with tighter turns, shaded forest sections, and a more technical rhythm that keeps the ride engaging all the way back toward Wi******er. Altogether, it’s a loop that delivers just the right balance of scenery, twisties, and memorable stops for a satisfying day ride.

Blackwater Falls State Park (222 miles, 4 hours 12 minutes, roundtrip) The ride follows John Marshall Highway westbound into the mountains, where the road begins to wind and elevation gradually increases. Crossing into West Virginia, the route continues along West Virginia Route 55, offering a more engaging ride with sweeping curves, elevation changes, and scenic overlooks as it passes through small mountain communities and forested stretches. The terrain becomes more rugged approaching Blackwater Falls State Park, a popular destination known for its natural beauty and cooler mountain climate. At the park, riders can take a short walk to view Blackwater Falls, where the Blackwater River drops approximately 57 feet into a narrow gorge. The water’s distinctive dark amber color comes from tannins released by fallen hemlock and red spruce needles, giving the falls their name and making them one of the most photographed spots in the region. The return ride follows Northwestern Turnpike eastbound, providing a faster but still scenic route with long, sweeping sections through open countryside before reconnecting with Virginia State Route 37.

Blue Ridge and Barbecue (229 miles, 5 hours 34 minutes, roundtrip) Scenic ride along the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains with views of Old Rag. Stop for lunch at the award winning Barbecue Exchange in Gordonsville VA. After sampling some great food, the route continues to sample some of the tastiest back roads as it winds back to Wi******er.

Buc-ee's (172 miles, 3 hours 45 minutes, roundtrip) A ride from Skyline HD down to Buc-ee’s in Mount Crawford and back offers the kind of experience riders chase—equal parts scenic beauty, quiet roads, and just enough comfort stops to keep things relaxed. Heading south via Middle Road and Back Road, the route winds through peaceful farmland, rolling hills, and long stretches of open countryside that feel tailor-made for a bike, with light traffic and gentle curves that let you settle into the rhythm of the ride. A quick stop at Lander’s Grocery gives you a chance to stretch, grab a drink, and reset before continuing on. Reaching Buc-ee’s adds a fun, almost quirky destination—famous for its massive size, clean facilities, and endless snacks (e.g., wall of jerky). If you've never been, you owe yourself a trip. The return trip along US-340 provides a slightly faster, more direct ride, with sweeping views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance.

Burkittsville and Barbecue (184 miles, 5 hours 24 minutes, roundtrip) Head east crossing the Blue Ridge at Ashby Gap and into Virginia's Hunt Country. Follow the trail of Mosby's Men through the towns of Paris, Upperview, Rectortown, Atoka and Waterford. Follow the Catoctin Mountains across the Potomac River, over Crampton Gap (Gathland State Park) and through Burkittsville (The Blair Witch Project). Stop for lunch at Black Hog BBQ in Middletown (because even witches enjoy great barbecue). Continue north to Smithburg before turning west and south to ride through the historic towns of Boonsboro, Sharpsburg, and Shepherdstown.

C&C Frozen Treats & Virginia Beer Museum (46 miles, 1 hour 3 minutes, roundtrip) Leisurely ride to downtown Front Royal to visit a local handmade ice cream and Italian ice shop or the first beer museum in the country to focus on the single state’s history of beer. C&C Frozen Treats prides themselves on not being your average frozen treat shop. They create delicious old-time ice cream with a new age twist. C&C is open every day of the week at 10am. The Virginia Beer Museum tells this fascinating story through artifacts, displays and interactive tasting tours which promote Virginia Breweries. Museum hours of operation: 4pm-8pm (Wed/Thurs), 5pm-9pm (Fri), 3pm-9pm (Sat), and 11am-4pm (Sun), with tours offered during operating hours.

Charles Town Races (78 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes, roundtrip) Looping through Northern Virginia and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia makes for a great mix of smooth cruising and historic scenery. Heading east toward Purcellville, the road winds through horse country and open farmland, offering relaxed curves and wide views. Continuing on to Harpers Ferry, the ride becomes more dramatic with river crossings and glimpses of the Potomac and Shenandoah converging near this historic town. From there, it’s a short ride to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, a lively destination perfect for a break, food, or a bit of entertainment. The return leg heads back through Berryville, where the roads open up again into gentle farmland and rolling hills, making for an easy, scenic ride back to Wi******er.

Cidery Loop (69 miles, 1 hour 38 minutes, roundtrip) Leisurely loop around the Virginia countryside to visit three (3) separate hard cider distilleries in the local area. First stop is the rustic barn of Mt. Defiance Cider & Distillery. Here you can enjoy handcrafted ciders and small-batch spirits (bourbons, gins, ciders and absinthe) all made with Virginia-grown ingredients. Hours of operation: Wednesday-Sunday,12pm-6pm (parking lot is hard-packed gravel). Next up, Henway Hard Cider Company, where you can taste farm fresh cider at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Henway incorporates orchard fruits, like plums and cherries, and berries like black raspberries and strawberries into their distilled hard ciders. Hours of operation: Friday-Monday, 11am-6pm (parking lot is hard-packed gravel). Final stop of the loop, Wild Hare Cider Pubs, a small local cidery that press heritage apples, cool-ferment the juice to proper dry, and age for more than a year to produce their product. These dry ciders are authentic and simple, wild yet elegant. Hours of operation: 5pm-8pm (Thurs), 4pm-10pm (Fri), 2pm-10pm (Sat) and 1pm-6pm (Sun).

Country Roads Take Me Home (161 miles, 4 hours 7 minutes, roundtrip) Scenic mountain route, with several switchbacks, through the backroads of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Make a stop along the way at Slanesville General Store, built over 80 years ago, the General Store is a place where you can get most of your necessities. Known by locals as “The Slanesville Mall”, which has a post office, bank and a quaint diner, it has become a gathering place of friendly faces, family and friends. If you happen to be an “out of towner”, you’ll be friends and family by the time you leave. In addition, this route takes you through Berkeley Springs, WV, known to many as “America’s First Spa”, famous for its warm, therapeutic mineral springs. The town center features Berkeley Springs State Park, with year-round 74-degree springs, offering mineral baths and Roman-style soaking tubs, George Washington’s Bathtub, a vibrant arts scene, and outdoor activities at Cacapon State Park. Grab some lunch at Canary Grill, a warmly relaxed eatery offering nice views and diverse menu options, before picking up more of this scenic route back to Wi******er.

Dealers-Eastern Loop (133 miles, 2 hours 39 minutes, roundtrip) Scenic and curvy, but simple route on state and US roads. Head over the mountains through the valleys to visit Patriot Harley Davidson and Bull Run Harley Davidson.

Dealers-Northern Loop (199 miles, 3 hours 39 minutes, roundtrip) This ride stops at two dealerships, M&S Harley Davidson and Battlefield Harley Davidson, as well as a ride 365 location for Maryland (Thurmont, Maryland, On Hallowed Ground). This is mostly highway for a direct route, with some scenic roads.

Dealer - Stonewall H-D (172 miles, 3 hours 30 minutes, roundtrip). Ride through scenic one and two lane horse farms, on winding roads to Stonewall Harley-Davidson. This is one of the check in points for the H-D check in program on your app.

Distillery Loop (181 miles, 3 hours 39 minutes, roundtrip) Leisurely loop through northwestern Virginia countryside to visit two (2) separate local distilleries in the area. First stop is Copper Fox Distillery, located within the Sperryville River District complex (parking lot is gravel). Copper Fox Distillery is one of only five distilleries in the U.S. with a malting floor, and the spirits are double pot-distilled at a low 150 to 160 proof to enhance the fruitiness. Using the smoke of selected, smoldering fruit woods, hand-cut toasted fruit woods, that add a range of natural flavors to the maturation process. Hours of operations: Sunday-Wednesday (12pm-6pm) and Thursday-Saturday (12pm-8pm). The Sperryville River District is home to artists, craftsmen, shopping, antiquing, seasonal farmers market, and one of 30 Civil War Trail Markers marking a major throughfare and gateway for both Union and Confederate troops. Continuing on, you’ll find yourself at Belmont Farms Distillery and Brewery. Recognized as one of America’s first craft distilleries, and home to Discovery Channel Moonshiner Tim Smith’s Climax Moonshine, it was founded in 1988 by Master Distiller Chuck Miller and produces whiskey in a genuine solid copper pot still. Chuck Miller and Tim Smith share similar passions and led to a great friendship, which was featured in the TV show Moonshiners, which highlighted the time for Tim to become legal, and Climax Moonshine was officially born and marketed via Belmont Farms. Tours of the distillery are every 30 minutes on the top of hour during business hours. Hours of operation: Tuesday-Saturday (11am-5pm).

Falling Toward Seneca (307 miles, 7 hours 24 minutes, roundtrip) Ready to put some miles on your bike? This ride visits two iconic locations in West Virginia: Blackwater Falls and Seneca Rocks. The route will avoid the concrete slab known as US-48 for most of the day opting to explore local roads through the mountains, along the North River and a branch of the Potomac. The lunch stop will be Sirianni’s Pizza Cafe in Davis (cash-only with onsite ATM). After lunch, you'll head over to Blackwater Falls State Park to view the falls from a couple of overlooks. From there, you'll drop out of the mountains, across the Cheat river and south to Elkins before turning east to ride back through the mountains toward Seneca Rock, one of West Virginia’s best known scenic (and climbing) attractions.

Graffiti House (130 miles, 2 hours 37 minutes, roundtrip). Ride uses secondary and back roads through farms to the Graffiti House, believed to have been built in 1858 and used as a hospital by both Union and Confederate forces. The walls of the second floor contain inscriptions, drawings, messages, and signatures of Civil War soldiers, hense the name “Graffiti House.” The graffiti could have been made by soldiers recuperating in the hospital, by other soldiers posted at Brandy Station or by soldiers passing through. It is believed that these writings are one of the most extensive collections of Civil War era graffiti discovered in recent decades. Some of the signatures include that of George Custer and Jeb Stuart. Guided rides will have tour guides meet us for a personal tour and information through the writings. On your own, house is open on Saturdays.

Granny's Breakfast Bar & Grill (34 miles, 1 hour, roundtrip) Easy ride through scenic farms with simple curves for breakfast or lunch.

Harper's Ferry (78 miles, 1 hour 39 minutes, roundtrip) This ride to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park offers a blend of smooth cruising and deep American history. Heading out on Charles Town Pike, the route carries you through rolling countryside and into the scenic river valley where the Potomac and Shenandoah meet. Harpers Ferry is a place of major historical significance—most famously as the site of John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry, an event that helped ignite tensions leading to the Civil War. The town also played a key role during the Civil War itself due to its strategic location at the crossroads of rivers and railroads, changing hands multiple times between Union and Confederate forces. Today, the preserved park lets you walk through that history, with old streets, museums, and sweeping overlooks that give a sense of its past importance. The return ride along U.S. Route 340 and Veterans Memorial Highway offers a slightly faster pace, with long curves and scenic views that make for a relaxed and satisfying ride back to Wi******er.

Hayfield Family Restaurant (32 miles, 1 hour 2 minutes, roundtrip) A relaxed breakfast ride to Hayfield Family Restaurant is a perfect way to start the day on two wheels. Rolling out through the scenic backroads around Wi******er, you’ll pass stretches of farmland, quiet neighborhoods, and gentle curves that ease you into the ride without any rush. Once you arrive, Hayfield offers classic, hearty breakfast options—think fluffy pancakes, eggs cooked your way, crispy bacon or sausage, biscuits with gravy, and hot coffee to fuel the rest of the morning. After a satisfying stop, the return trip takes a quicker route back, letting you enjoy a bit more speed and open road while still soaking in the countryside.

Jane's Lunch (27 miles, 52 minutes, roundtrip) This is a nice easy ride through farms and valleys with easy curves and single lane roads for breakfast or lunch for good food. This is on a pretty Main Street, with shops and restaurants to check out after breakfast/lunch.

Luray Caverns & Cooter’s Place (123 miles, 2 hours 37 minutes, roundtrip) Found by accident in August of 1878, Andrew and William Campbell and their friend Benton Stebbins were walking in the field and felt a rush of cold air coming from a sink hole. Their discovery of Luray Caverns ended up being the largest series of caverns in eastern America. While visiting you will be able to see calcite formations in its finest purity as well as a 47 foot column an example of stalactite and stalagmite. After you have finished your exploration of the caverns you can go back in time to Cooter’s place and the Dukes of Hazard Museum. This free museum features the General Lee, Cooter’s tow truck along with other vehicles from the show as well as other memorabilia. There is also a gift shop and restaurant and on Saturday’s from 1 pm to 3 pm, Cooter’s Garage Band will entertain you. Luray Caverns is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, admission is $36.00 for adults and $34.00 for seniors, check website for additional discounts. Cooter’s is open Sunday thru Thursday 9 am – 5 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am to 6 pm.

Manassas Battlefield (98 miles, 2 hours, roundtrip) The Manassas Battlefield is a must see for anyone interested in American history. This route takes you to the Henry Hill Visitor Center, which offers exhibits and interpretation of the First Battle of Bull Run, the first major battle of the Civil War. It has Civil War era uniforms, weapons, field gear, and electronic battle map as well as the orientation film Manassas: End of Innocence. This is the sight where General Jackson earned his name of “Stonewall”. The guided ride will spend about 2 hours (suggested by the Park Rangers) at the Visitors Center. You may go on your own to tour other parts of the battlefield.

Melrose Caverns (168 miles, 3 hours 19 minutes, roundtrip) Take this scenic route along the Virginia/West Virginia state line to a cavern that ties back to the Civil War days. Melrose Caverns lies on lies on a small part of a pre-revolutionary land grant to the Harrison family and was discovered in 1818. As war raged in the Shenandoah Valley, Union troops sought a safe place to hide rifles, supplies and ammunition. Melrose Cavern was that perfect location: 40 feet below ground and 55-degrees. At other times, Confederate soldiers occupied the cavern. Both sides recorded their presence on the Cavern walls by carving their names/dates and other items. Due to lack of weather underground, ballistic impacts and other marking have remained visible and vibrant and can be viewed on the tour.
