Ask not for whom the thermometer rises, it rises for thee. 🌡️

While California might be seeing record highs right now (104° in downtown LA on Monday!), the slow burn is happening here too. According to our own National Weather Service office in Wilmington:

🔸 We're already about 2°F warmer than in 1900, most of it since 1980, with another 1–4°F expected by 2050.
🔸 Wilmington's average summer high has climbed from 85.8° (1880–1900) to 88.7° (2004–2024).
🔸 We're now 2.5 times more likely to hit 95°, and 5 times more likely to hit 100°, than 130 years ago.

By 2050–2075, NWS says Wilmington will feel like today's Mobile, Biloxi, or Baton Rouge.

The good news is that California has been leading the country on climate: clean cars, clean power, and serious planning for heat and wildfire. The rest of us would do well to follow your lead. Stay cool out there. ❤️

⚡ ACTION ALERT: New Hanover County votes Monday on decades of growth. But where are the climate considerations? ⚡

On Monday, Oct. 5, the Board of Commissioners will consider adopting the 2026 Comprehensive Plan (formerly Destination 2050). This plan will guide rezoning, development, and county investment in unincorporated New Hanover County for years to come.

The problem: the draft leaves out key recommendations from the County's own 2025 Sustainability Assessment, including:
• Extreme heat planning
• Tree canopy targets
• Reuse of flood buyout land
• Solar and EV readiness
• Emissions goals

The County has already done the homework. Now we need to ask Commissioners to put it in the plan.

Speaking to CNA in Singapore, the climate advocate warned of rising temperatures, melting ice and increasingly erratic weather, saying predictions he highlighted 20 years ago in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth had proved “exactly accurate”.

🌍 New UN report: we're going to blow past the 1.5°C limit. But there's still a path back.

The UN Environment Programme's latest report confirms what many climate scientists have been warning: the world will cross the 1.5°C (2.7°F) warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement within the next few years. We're already at 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, and on our current policy path, we're headed toward 2.6°C by 2100.

But the report isn't just delivering bad news; it maps out a way back. The strategy has three phases: limit how high temperatures peak, get through an "overshoot" period while cutting emissions fast, and then pull carbon out of the atmosphere to cool things back down below 1.5°C by the end of the century.

The catch: every five-year delay in cutting emissions adds at least 0.1°C to that peak. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres put it, "Humanity is speeding past the limit to avoid climate catastrophe."

This is exactly why local action matters right now: every ton of emissions we avoid today shortens how long we spend in the danger zone. 💚

In a strategic retreat in the fight against climate change, the United Nations has acknowledged that Earth has lost its chance to prevent some of the worst of global warming's harms. So now the world must figure out how to get temperatures below the danger zone and back to safety, officials say.

Climate justice is not just about protecting the planet; it's about protecting all beings who inhabit it. 🌍

That belief shapes how we organize. The Climate Reality Project Cape Fear NC Chapter follows the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing as our guidebook for partnership and coalition work. Six principles guide us:

--Be inclusive
--Emphasis on bottom-up organizing
--Let people speak for themselves
--Work together in solidarity and mutuality
--Build just relationships among ourselves
--Commitment to self-transformation

We're not here to "save" local communities. We follow their lead, share power, and build shared agendas together.

This matters globally and at home. Communities in countries that have contributed the least to historical emissions often face the most severe climate impacts. Nations that benefited from early industrialization—and caused most historical emissions—should support locally led solutions, not dictate them, and should advocate for finance and resources to flow toward those most affected.

The same dynamic plays out domestically, between wealthier, more privileged communities and lower-income frontline communities.

Climate justice means centering the people most affected, not speaking over them.

Data centers are popping up across the country, not just in Virginia's "Data Center Alley" or Pennsylvania's new AI hubs, but in communities nationwide, including right here in North Carolina. As this build-out accelerates, we need clear guardrails to make sure it doesn't come at the expense of our climate, our power grid, or our neighbors.

That's why Climate Reality Cape Fear is calling for accountability. Here's what we believe every data center project must meet:

Data centers MUST NOT:
--Be powered by fossil fuels.
--Strain power grids to the point of instability.
--Interfere with efforts to expand electricity access in developing regions.
--Negatively impact communities' water availability.

Data centers MUST:
--Be powered by 100% clean energy sources.
--Be fully transparent about project specifications.
--Obtain full community consent (including frontline, vulnerable, and marginalized populations) for all related project sites and supply chain operations.

Communities deserve a say in how this growth happens, and the planet can't afford for it to happen the wrong way. 🌎

🌊 New reporting from WFAE, Charlotte: Seagrass in North Carolina's Albemarle-Pamlico estuary has declined by more than 16% between 2006 and 2020, and what's left is increasingly fragmented rather than the large, connected meadows scientists want to see.

Why it matters:

Seagrass provides critical fish habitat
It sequesters carbon
It protects shorelines from erosion
It filters water by trapping sediment and excess nutrients

Rising sea levels and warming waters tied to climate change are among the drivers, and as one ecologist with the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership put it, "Once you lose it, it's very hard to get it back." State officials are now working on new water quality standards and expanded monitoring to try to turn the trend around.
