Numbers don’t lie, but they can most definitely catch your attention.

At Cape Fear Collective, we help turn those numbers into insight, empowering you to use data you might not even know yet to make a difference in your community.

Hi, we’re Cape Fear Collective, a local nonprofit in Wilmington, NC, and our housing team is dedicated to preserving homes in our community that still hold potential. NOT flipping them.

When we preserve a home, we’re not renovating it for a profit, we’re protecting a piece of Wilmington’s story.

This is just one piece of what we do at CFC. If you care about creating a stronger, more equitable NC, you’re in the right place. 👋

Your nonprofit is sitting on a goldmine of information. We're here to show you how to turn it into action!

On November 19th, join us in Raleigh, NC at the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits for our hands-on workshop, Beyond the Buzzword: Making Data Work for Your Nonprofit Mission. 📊

The workshop will be led by Abla ElSergany, our Senior Data Scientist and Anna Casey, our Associate Director of Research & Insights. Together, they bring deep experience helping nonprofits translate complex data into clear insights and real-world impact. 🙌

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help nonprofits across NC use data for good at the Conference for North Carolina's Nonprofits. We hope to see you there.

Want to register for the conference? Comment “DATA FOR GOOD” below, and we will send you a direct link to their site!

But what do these mind-blowing numbers really mean, and why do they matter??? 👇

Our data team found that when people in Wilmington, NC move from lower-paying jobs to higher-paying ones, $1 can turn into $8.98 in one year, and $37 in five years.

That $1 represents the investment it takes to help someone get there (through training, education, or certifications) and the return comes from their higher wages flowing back into the local economy.

This data is proof that workforce investment isn’t just good for individuals…it’s good for the entire community! That’s what we mean by data for good.

If you’re interested in how data like this can help your organization make smarter decisions and deepen community impact, reach out to Tom, our Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships, at [email protected].

The Southside community here in Wilmington, NC reminds us that no single data point tells the whole story.

Higher incomes and lower rent burdens can look like progress until you see the loss beneath the surface: half of Southside’s low-income and Black residents gone in just a few years. For us, this isn’t just data. Much of our affordable housing portfolio is here, and we use insights like this to make sure our work strengthens community, not just statistics.

And we want to help others do the same. Together, we can use data not to simplify the story, but to see it more fully. 📊

How do you build stronger data work? You start by building stronger relationships.

After three years as a Data Scientist, Tom Gomes is stepping into the role of Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships.

Through this work, he’ll connect the dots between data, people, and purpose, strengthening how we collaborate with partners and ensuring our work stays on track and aligned with their goals.

We’re thankful to have Tom leading this next chapter, helping turn stronger partnerships into stronger outcomes for North Carolina.

Here’s a short summary of what Abla, our Senior Data Scientist, recently presented at the North Carolina Public Health Conference in Wilmington, North Carolina.

She presented on our work with , a public benefits screener created in partnership with , that helps North Carolinians learn which public benefits, tax credits, and resources they may qualify for.

She shared how we evaluated the tool’s performance, its accuracy in connecting people to benefits, and whether it encouraged users to take the next step. Make sure to watch until the end to see if MyFriendBen helped more people apply for the benefits they deserve.

This project is a real-world example of our mission in action: using data to help partners understand their impact and strengthen the tools that serve North Carolina communities. 🙌

Data can get us answers, but how do we get there? The real power comes when we ask the right questions, dig deeper, and connect the dots to action!

Wages are NOT keeping up with home prices in the Cape Fear region...and it’s forcing many working families out of the housing market altogether.

Recently, partnered with to publish a report that dives deep into the housing gap across New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, and surrounding counties.

The data is clear:
✅ Home prices are rising faster than incomes
✅ Most homes on the market are unaffordable for the average household
✅ And housing instability is linked to health outcomes and life expectancy

We believe safe, stable housing should be accessible to everyone. This report outlines what needs to change and how we can get there.

COMMENT “I want to learn more” and we will send you a link to the full report! 📊

Nearly 100 community leaders came together around one question 👉 how do we ensure more people in our region have access to safe, stable housing?

We’re proud to be part of conversations like this and even more committed to driving solutions that reflect the real needs of our communities!

This summer, our Senior Data Scientist, Abla Elsergany, shared key findings from A Place to Call Home at a housing affordability breakfast hosted by , , and Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association.

When you hear “data science,” you might think spreadsheets and code. But for Dante, it’s about people making sense of complex systems so communities don’t get left behind!

From identifying early signals of neighborhood change, to uncovering health gaps hidden in zip codes, Dante’s work shows how data can be a tool for equity.

We’re so glad Dante chose to bring his skills and his passion to this team, and grateful to have his vision and energy shaping our work at CFC. 👏
