Our mature trees, ie pine trees, consume 650 gallons of water. They have root systems that have built our properties up, that without we would be wetlands again, ie your home would flood. That was one of the issues during Hurricane Florence. Duke energy has been neglectful to the maintenance of the power lines and are now cutting down the complete buffer system of trees for entire neighborhoods. Regardless of what they tell you, you can refuse having your trees cut down. On the power lines they are by law required to get a permit to cut a tree, which they haven’t been doing. Because we are outside of city limits and don’t have a mayor or council to hold them accountable they have been completely unregulated. If you see them, tell them “no”. Ask for the permits. Report them to new Hanover county land development and use. Call your county commissioners and make them aware. Because they are a big company, they are not exempt from the law and responsibility. Please dm me if you would like contact information, copies of the laws protecting us. Educate yourself on the value of your trees. Today was a small victory when the county shut them down for failure to have the correct permits. Be proactive, before your home floods, because if another hurricane Florence hits us, not only is your insurance going to triple again, you probably won’t be able to get it.
Today was a small victory in that the county actually shut them down mid-cut from lack of permits.
