Attention, art enthusiasts! Long-time Coastal Land Trust friend and talented oil painter Gail Black is currently exhibiting her work in "Wild Places" at Sunset River Gallery through October 24. 50% of all proceeds from artwork sales will support the Coastal Land Trust!

A lifelong North Carolinian, Gail is known for her landscape paintings inspired by the marshes, wetlands, and wild places of the Carolinas.

Speaking about the wild places left in the Carolinas, the artist says, “These extraordinary and untouched areas are vanishing at an alarming pace. I want to share these places with the world before they have totally vanished and leave a visual record for the future. I hope this visual. history will find homes where they can nourish the viewers’ souls and pass on our mutual love of extraordinary places.”

Sunset River Gallery is located at 10283 Beach Dr SW, Calabash, NC 28467.

Did you know that North Carolina is the Great Trails State? This year, Great Trails State Day is Saturday, October 17, and it just so happens that this special day falls on an Everett Creek Open Hike Weekend!

Celebrate Great Trails State Day by exploring Everett Creek Preserve in Sneads Ferry, where there are multiple unpaved trails of various lengths, on-site bathrooms, and a longleaf pine restoration area. The Preserve will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am – 3pm.

Everett Creek is located at 333 Betty Dixon Rd. Open Hike Weekends are held on the third weekend of each month.

The time has finally come! Jesica began her new role as Executive Director at the beginning of this month. The transition was thoughtfully planned to ensure continuity, and Jesica has stepped into her new role with confidence and ease.

“I am deeply honored to be entrusted with this role. The Coastal Land Trust has been my professional home for more than two decades, and I understand its mission, its people, and its potential at every level. I look forward to building on the extraordinary foundation Harrison and this team have created, and to doing whatever it takes to protect the lands and waters of coastal North Carolina for generations to come”.

We’re proud to introduce Jesica to those who may not know her yet – and to celebrate her with the many people who have had the privilege of working alongside her over the years.

As we look toward the future, we’re grateful for Harrison’s leadership through a pivotal time of transition and excited to have Jesica carrying this work forward. Her deep knowledge of our organization, our partners, and the lands we protect makes this next chapter feel like both a continuation of our legacy and a new beginning.

On September 26, more than 200 friends of the Coastal Land Trust gathered at Everett Creek Preserve to celebrate another successful year of conservation along the North Carolina coast.

We are incredibly grateful for our community of members, supporters, volunteers, and partners who make this work possible. Because of you, we can continue saving the lands you love along the coast.

Conservation property highlight: Rocky Point Marl! In December of 2022, the Coastal Land Trust purchased 32.16 acres in Pender County, a very special property that lies within the larger Rocky Point Marl Forest Significant Natural Heritage Area. The land is considered an “exceptionally significant site” by the NC Natural Heritage Program.

This little wetland gem, described as a ‘wet marl forest’ was near the top of our Top 40 list due to its biological uniqueness. We secured funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant program to conserve it, with thanks to the Toothman family for the “bargain sale” which allowed us to purchase the property for less than market rate.

This small-but-mighty site is quite special. This natural community features nutmeg hickory (the northernmost range of occurrence for this species which has a primary range in the lower Mississippi River valley), roughleaf dogwood (at one of the two sites in which it is found in North Carolina) and a thick cover of dwarf palmetto. It also home to and provides habitat for a relict population of eastern wood rats.
