Patty the adoptable mini mule had his first ground drive in harness today, and rocked it! This little guy is going to be awesome in cart. Not only has he proven that he's good on the trail, and has worn a pack saddle, but he also has no problem with the harness and is picking up the cues for ground driving really well. I'm so surprised that he hasn't had any interest yet, this little guy can go any direction. And he's cute as a button.

*Oh and four donkeys cannot constitute a "study", by the way: if you know you know*

Appropriate uses of donkeys include -
Riding (with appropriate training, well fitted tack, and appropriate sized rider).
Driving- in correctly fitted harness and cart
Packing- again, correct fitting equipment. This includes pack b***o racing.
Therapy/pet- donkeys can exist without needing to have a job. Some thrive with work and some would rather just "be". And that's ok. No animal owes you work.

Inappropriate uses of donkeys-
Roping donkeys
Necking donkeys
Lush pasture or horse companion/diet donkeys (with minimal exceptions)
Livestock guardian donkeys
Donkey basketball donkeys

Seven, an adoptable mid-teens gelding donkey, showing off his favorite activity- ear rubs. He is good at catching, leads ok, picks up all four feet very calmly, and is available to a home with another VERY calm and sweet donkey. Would be perfect as a companion to an elderly donkey.

Look at how well little Patty is doing on his hoof lifting! This is the extent of his kicking now, you wouldn't believe how hard he used to kick and how much he used to scream and spin about it.

We have come so incredibly far. This guy is definitely just about ready to find another home. He would excel at being ponied and packed, being a companion for a very playful, higher energy gelding, or being a companion to another mule that is also playful and dominant.

We have two longears looking for perfect homes:
1. Seven- mid teens standard pink/red roan donkey gelding. He needs a very kind adopter who wants to pamper him, and a buddy or buddies to live with that are going to treat him very gently and kindly. He would be a really nice fit for an elderly donkey that needs a gentle companion. Halters, leads (working on leading more consistently) and picks up feet for the farrier. Loves deep ear rubs.

2. Patty- 8 year old miniature gelded mule. Needs a companion/s who will be playful with a dominant personality. He also needs a human who is fair, kind, and won't put up with shenanigans from him. He is brave and bold. He catches, ties, has learned to pick up all four feet for the farrier recently (and will need continued training to keep his skills) leads, carries a pack saddle, has done a bit of ground driving in the past, and hiked out on the trail well. Did well being ponied.

Drizzle working in the garden pulling the harrow during Pioneer/Homesteaders camp a Laughing Buck Farm and Friends Of Laughing Buck Farm Nonprofit . Yes, that's me in a dress and bonnet. 😂

I have a pretty cool "day job" when I'm not at the rescue or being an author. Usually I'm dressed as a horseback riding instructor though!

Patty now officially is letting me trim him all around! Only used the rasp on the back feet due to wanting to make it a shorter and more positive experience for him, but I was able to use all of my tools on the front feet which were the worst, and rasp both hind feet as well as bring both hind feet AND front feet forward for rasping. Considering this guy used to double barrel me and scream at me if I got too close to his hind end, I would say we've come really far! I did give him dorm before this and it didn't affect him in the least, so I wonder if he was able to spit it out when I wasn't looking. Either way, we now know that he can be trimmed without any sedation because he certainly was not sedate!

I can't believe how far he's come so quickly. That's a huge difference. This guy will be ready for adoption pretty soon!
He would do best with a playful and dominant gelding or mare on dry lot only in a diet as he is obese.

Seven truly loves a deep ear rub, even delaying breakfast for one. This sweetheart will need a home with a very gentle person and donkey friend. He's quite sensitive and soulful.
