Trees are under threat at East Potomac Park, where over 400 trees were removed this weekend, and another 300 are slated to be taken down.

The National Park Service says the work restores the course’s historic landscape. But the public hasn’t seen which trees are coming down or why. The sudden timing left no room for meaningful public involvement and raises questions about the future of this public space.

Like many of you, we’re concerned and surprised to hear that more than 500 trees are being removed at East Potomac Park today.

Beginning Saturday, National Park Service crews will start another major round of cutting at East Potomac Golf Links, according to a new filing in federal court.

No thoughts, just big tree 🌳

Meet the 330-year-old Travilah Oak, which predates the founding of the United States. Our team recently spent some time at this breathtaking white oak in Travilah, Maryland. In the 1990s, the community rallied together to protect this historic tree from development – and it worked.

It was one of several giants on a recent tour of “ancient” and “veteran” trees with Montgomery Parks & Tom Hill. In the UK, “ancient” and “veteran” are formal designations, and arborists let these trees age on their own terms – deadwood, quirky shapes and all. Turns out those “imperfections” are a big part of how their trees last for centuries (and they make great homes for wildlife, too).

Ready to explore the treetops and grow your skills? Casey Trees, Montgomery Parks, and Bartlett Tree Experts are excited to announce our third annual Tree Climbing Academy, taking place November 2-6 in Wheaton Regional Park! 🌳 🥾

During this week-long training, you’ll learn from experienced instructors how to climb safely and confidently, with hands-on instruction in ropes and knots, climbing saddles and equipment, and current industry best practices. Upon completion, participants will earn a certificate and $500.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and interested in joining or advancing their career in the tree care industry.

Don’t let the calendar fool you — we’re still in the thick of summer heat. 🌡️

Even though fall is right around the corner, this week’s temperatures are reaching highs of 95° F. Combined with little rain in the forecast, this is your reminder that young trees need to be watered! 💧

Trees planted in the last three years need about 10-25 gallons of water a week, depending on their size, to establish and endure the DMV’s scorching temps. Water slowly and deeply once a week, preferably early in the morning or at night, to avoid evaporation during the hottest hours of the day.
