🚵 Next challenge: mountain biking in Crested Butte.

On Friday, participants in the DC Adaptive Sports trip traded the ropes course for two wheels and mountain trails.

For a group whose goals include testing their physical abilities and building confidence, mountain biking offered plenty of opportunities for both.

New terrain. New skills. A few nerves. A lot of encouragement.

And with every climb, turn and stretch outside their comfort zones, another opportunity to realize:

I can do hard things.

The activities may be what you see in the photos, but the experience goes much deeper.

This week is about creating opportunities for burn survivors to challenge themselves, connect with others who understand their experiences, and rediscover what’s possible.

And there’s still more ahead. 🏔️

Challenge #1: Look up. 😳

One of the DC Adaptive Sports adventures took our group to the ropes course — starting low and then heading high.

Very high.

For participants who came into the week wanting to increase their confidence and test their physical abilities, this was a pretty fitting place to begin.

The ropes course required balance, strength, trust, problem-solving and, at times, the willingness to do something even when your brain was suggesting that staying firmly planted on the ground was an excellent alternative.

And that’s part of the purpose of this week.

It isn’t about being fearless.

It’s about discovering that fear, uncertainty or physical limitations don’t automatically get the final say.

One challenge down. A whole week of possibilities ahead. 🏔️

🏔️ The DC Adaptive Sports trip is underway in Crested Butte, Colorado.

This week, several burn survivors from our area are stepping outside their comfort zones, testing their limits and discovering what they’re capable of — alongside two members of the D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation and Rebekah Allely, OT and our Aftercare Program Coordinator.

Each participant arrived with their own goals for the week, but one theme came up again and again:

Build confidence. Test my physical abilities. See what I can do.

That’s exactly what this retreat is about.

Through outdoor challenges, shared experiences and time together in the mountains, participants have the opportunity to push themselves, support one another and reconnect with a sense of strength and possibility.

And they wasted absolutely no time getting started. 💪

More from Crested Butte coming soon!
