27 farmers are on their way to becoming Community Agricultural Promoters this year! Excited to share some photos from their progress.

Promoters are family farmers who go through SHI’s promoter training program to become leaders in their communities. After graduation, they grow local environmental resilience by:

🌱sharing their agroecological knowledge with fellow farmers
🌱leading the adoption of sustainable techniques in their own plots

In April, participants celebrated finishing the first of their five training modules. Once they graduate, they are certified by the Honudran National Institute of Professional Formation (INFOP), our government partner.

One future promoter told us: “All this knowledge significantly strengthens our capacity to seek new and better production methods . . . and to develop alternative products that reduce our dependence on commercial goods.”

We can’t wait to share graduation photos later this summer!

Beginning on Earth Day, we invited you – our community of supporters and friends – to plant seeds of renewal for rural Honduran schoolchildren, farmers committed to restoring their land, and communities growing their resilience in the face of climate change.

Thank you for planting seeds of renewal that can help restore ecosystems and build resilient communities for generations to come!

That’s nearly three decades of…

✨ partnering with farming families to restore their land through agroecological practices

✨ investing in environmental education for the next generation of farmers

✨ working with farmers so they can feed their families and make a living selling their produce

✨ incredible support from donors, funders, and partner organizations who believe in this mission as strongly as we do.

Thank you for your part in nearly three decades of regenerative farming, improved livelihoods, and hopeful futures!

What does it take to get a tree in the ground? 🌳

Tree planting might look simple (Dig hole. Put tree in ground.) But in reality, every seedling that finds its way into the soil represents a community of collaboration, planning, and hard work.

The effort is so worth it.

Every sapling added to a forest, agroforestry plot, or orchard is an important step toward cleaner air and water, healthier soil, and a more resilient planet.

Read our latest blog post to learn how Sustainable Harvest International supports tree planting in rural Honduras — and how tree planting supports a sustainable future for us all:

Earlier this month, we shared the story of a tree-planting day at the Centro Básico Unión Centroamericana primary school, in rural Intibucá, Honduras.  Schoolchildren gathered with their teachers and Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) team members to plant fruit trees, which will one

Héctor Fermín Domínguez Domínguez once faced a choice familiar to too many young Hondurans: leave home or stay and struggle.

More than once, he attempted to migrate North to find better opportunities – which were dangerous and uncertain journeys.

Today, things have changed.

Héctor joined RAOS, an organic coffee growers' cooperative and Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) partner, and is training to become a farmer promoter in his community.

Héctor now sees a future in Honduras. He no longer sees leaving home as the only option. He calls our work with RAOS and partner farmers “una canasta llena de opciones” — a basket full of options — opening doors for young people to grow and thrive in their own communities.🧺

Read more of Héctor’s story here:

Earlier this year, Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) team members worked alongside rural Indigenous school children in Honduras to plant an orchard on their school grounds.

This orchard will be lovingly tended by these children, and will one day bear fruit that will nourish both them and their families.

As the school director Jorge Alberto GarcĂa said: "What we are planting today is not just trees. What we are planting today is learning, awareness, and a future for our students and our community."

Our work with the next generation is part of the larger ecosystem of change we’re building together with farmers and local partners: one that helps improve farmer incomes, food access for families, and a healthier planet for us all.

This Spring, you can help plant seeds of renewal alongside SHI. Give today: https://www.sustainableharvest.org/spring-giving

Dionicio lives with his family on a plot near Agua FrĂa. After learning alongside SHI, Dionicio has implemented a number of planet-friendly techniques to convert his land into a sustainable farm, including minimal tillage and terracing.

His two children, a young boy and little girl, often visit their dad at work, witnessing firsthand what it takes to transition a farm from conventional to regenerative practices.

They are part of the next generation of sustainable farmers who can one day improve the lives of their families and communities through farming.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Earth Day is an invitation to take individual action on behalf of the planet we all share. Each act is part of a collective effort to protect ecosystems and build climate resilience.

Today, we invite you to take action by supporting Sustainable Harvest International to plant seeds of hope and renewal with rural farming communities in Honduras.

When small-scale farmers renew their land, they renew a sense of possibility — for their families, for their communities, and for the planet.

Meet our team! 🌱

Executive Director Janeen Simon brings decades of experience caring for the land and soil to her leadership of SHI and its mission to uplift farming families through regenerative agriculture. She holds a MSc in International Agriculture Development and finished all but the dissertation in a Native American Studies PhD program, both at UC Davis.

Janeen’s time in the Peace Corps in Guatemala sparked a life-long passion for protecting the environment while helping rural communities thrive. Throughout her more than 30 years living and working in Guatemala, Janeen worked as a field technician, program director, country director, executive director, and more, and was involved in nearly all facets of sustainable community development. Throughout that time, Janeen also owned and managed of a 360-acre sustainable coffee farm in one of the most biodiverse cloud forests of Guatemala.

Janeen currently lives on Flat Top Mountain in Tennessee and shares her tiny home and wooded property with horses, her rescue dog, and an abundance of wildlife.
