Together For Choice Uniting to protect and advance the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities

Together for Choice is a 501(c)(3) organization (Tax ID No: 82-2128631) with a mission "to unite to protect and advance the rights of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to live, work and thrive in a community or setting of their choice." Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) – like every other member of society, deserve a full array of

options in their residential, vocational and recreational choices. Their diversity and individual needs must be respected, honored and celebrated with the offering of a broad array of quality residential, vocational and recreational choices; expanded choices that will enrich each of their lives. We are joining together, representatives of organizations that serve individuals with I/DD, family members and loved ones, in recognition of the work that needs to be done to advance these individuals’ rights and expand their choices. We are spurred by the increasingly complex array of federal Medicaid and state agency rules that govern these critically important and personal housing and employment choices. Compounded by fiscal 'pull-back', these regulations and sub-regulatory guidance(s) are effectively reducing choices and availability of long-term care services for the I/DD community. We are excited and optimistic about the promise of coming together to ensure choice, options and appropriate resources for these individuals so that they can all live, work and thrive in a community or setting of their choice.

CMS says, “no cameras due to privacy.” Also, it says, “look for natural support.”

CMS, are you willing to be held accountable if something like this happens to our loved ones because of your policies?

A Los Angeles County woman alleges that a volunteer at her mother’s senior living facility sexually assaulted her mother, who has dementia, with the incident captured on in-room cameras.

“From 2019 to 2023, Indiana Medicaid paid Piece by Piece about $58 million, not including payments from managed-care companies that cover many Medicaid patients.”

Some companies have found lucrative opportunities to capitalize on a growing need, extracting payments as high as $800 an hour.

“The Ellen & Peter Johnson Dementia Village at Agrace is a revolutionary project breaking ground in Spring 2026 at Agrace's Madison campus.”

Imagine if “dementia” was replaced by “I/DD” or “autism.” Yes, people with I/DD would like a village, too! Why can’t we have nice things?

Yotam Rabinovich is 29 years old and is profoundly autistic.

In March of this year, he banged his head so violently against the wall, that it caused severe injuries to his spine and central nervous system.

He had to be anesthetized and ventilated.

This is the side of autism no one wants to see. This makes people uncomfortable. They just want to see the roses and the rainbows. The videos that give them the warm fuzzies.

The autism reveal parties with the cake and balloons and people celebrating their autism diagnosis.

But that’s not everyone’s reality.

Yotam’s parents aren’t celebrating this.

This is why I say “profound autism.” This is why I won’t back down and change the terms I use to please those advocates who, truth be told, have no clue what this life is like.

The college professor who claims to have high support needs is worlds apart from Yotam. Why do they have the same diagnosis?

It’s not a superpower for some. It’s not a gift. It can be devastating. And we need to continue to educate and spread awareness.

Our mighty mothers shared their perspective on the impact of the HCBS Settings Rule with the leaders of . Their compelling testimonies provided vital insight into the daily realities experienced by those affected. Unfortunately, the voices of families are often excluded from critical discussions. TFC is committed to elevating the voices of families and exploring actionable strategies to alleviate the impact of restrictive regulations that are currently impeding the creation and growth of innovative solutions we desperately need.

Today, we came together to recognize the 63 million+ family caregivers and 5 million+ direct support professionals who support our aging adults and people with disabilities in the U.S. They are the backbone of our community, yet they remain the most undervalued, underserved, and underpaid individuals and professionals in this country. This is not sustainable!
We are grateful to Administrator Mary Lazare for hosting this event to honor all caregivers and highlight the ongoing need to support them. We must take care of our caregivers—we owe them that much!!
