At 18 years old, just days before her 19th birthday, Lana was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

“I never expected to be sharing my cancer story,” Lana shared.

What started as exhaustion, dizziness, and unexplained bruising turned into something far more serious. After collapsing while getting ready for class and being misdiagnosed, she finally heard the words no one her age expects: “We think it’s cancer.”

Everything changed.

During treatment, Lana faced near-total isolation as the world shut down during COVID-19. Only her mom and sister could be by her side. Over the next 20 months, she navigated intensive chemotherapy, countless procedures, and life-threatening complications.

Today, she’s in remission, a graduate student in clinical social work, and an advocate using her voice to make sure people understand what blood cancer really looks like.

Blood Cancer United became a lifeline for Lana and her family, providing support when they needed it most, including helping her stay in school and continue pursuing her goals.

Now, she gives back. From organizing fundraisers to representing her community as a Light The Night Honored Hero, Lana is making an impact for others facing blood cancer.

During National Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Awareness Week, we recognize young adults like Lana who are navigating cancer, survivorship, and everything that comes with it.

Just over 10 years ago, Heather and Eric lost their son Henry to acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Henry was 17. He loved big bear hugs and met life with a smile.

Each year at Light The Night in Washington, D.C., family and friends gather in the Team Henry tent to remember him, celebrate his life, and carry his light forward.

Since 2015, Team Henry has shown up year after year, raising more than $350,000 in support of people affected by blood cancer. What began as grief turned into action.

Last year, Heather and Eric stood on stage as Gold Lantern holders in honor of Henry’s life and the 10 years since his passing. His light continues to shine through every person who gathers in his name. 💛

Start a Light The Night team in honor of someone you love and carry their light forward, too. Registration is open 👉 https://bcutd.org/4bvxgJ7

In February 2024, Holly was in her second trimester of pregnancy when she woke up with a swollen lymph node on her neck about the size of a golf ball.

After several tests and biopsies, she was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that needed immediate treatment. Waiting until after her baby was born wasn’t an option.

So Holly began chemotherapy while pregnant.

Over the next several months, she endured treatment, hospitalizations, heart complications, and an urgent C-section.

Through it all, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. And just a few weeks later, she received the news she had been hoping for. Holly was officially cancer-free.

When you register for Light The Night, you become part of a community that supports people like Holly facing blood cancer, raises funds for research, and brings neighbors together around a shared purpose.

International Childhood Cancer Day is a time to recognize children and families around the world whose lives have been forever changed by cancer. Today, we’re honored to share one of those stories and introduce our 2026 Light The Night Honored Hero, Lennox. 🤍

When Lennox was just eight months old, a small injury to his gums didn’t heal. What seemed minor quickly led to months of painful procedures and unanswered questions. By his first birthday, Lennox’s parents, Matthew and Hanh, finally learned the cause: their son had a rare blood cancer with three tumors in his skull.

Before Lennox could even walk, his days were filled with weekly chemotherapy, steroids, and hospital visits. When treatment became too much, his parents made the decision to enroll him in a clinical drug trial. Lennox responded well. His tumors have shrunk significantly, and he finished treatment this past December.

Through it all, Lennox kept showing up with his bright smile, lighting up every room he entered. He recently celebrated his third birthday, a milestone his parents once feared they might never reach.

Research and progress matter, and Lennox is living proof. Every medical breakthrough means more time, more moments, and more birthdays for children facing blood cancer.

This International Childhood Cancer Day, honor Lennox’s story and register for Light The Night 2026 to help create more birthdays and milestones for children facing blood cancer. 👉 https://bit.ly/3Zfam3i
