Join PFLAG National for this month’s PFLAG Academy Online virtual learning session, “Be Kind, Rewind: Recognizing Your Role in Building Inclusion” on Tuesday, October 27th at 8:30pm ET/ 5:30pm PT.
In this session, you’ll reflect on the way people are treated differently because of some aspect of their identity, the role that we all play, and what we can do to create kinder spaces at the individual level as well as in our capacity as PFLAG advocates.

Back in August, the HHS issued a new rule that would ban federal funding for medically necessary care for transgender youth under the age of 18 for Medicaid and under the age of 19 for CHIP. Now that this rule is officially in effect, we want to applaud the states that are refusing their own state Medicaid and CHIP funds to keep healthcare for trans youth accessible to their constituents.

We are PFLAG proud to honor the community all year long, including the launch of our newest PCC group dedicated to Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ Indigenous relatives, the PFLAG Connects: Two-Spirit & Indigenous Circle; the re-launch of our Indigenous-led chapter, PFLAG Native Metro Phoenix; and our investment in Bay Bank, founded and solely owned by the Oneida Nation.

🕯️Who was Matthew Shepard?

Described by friends and family as kind and easy to talk to, Matthew Shepard was a college student and victim of one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in American history. His memorial service garnered immense national and international media attention, which brought Matt’s story to the forefront of the fight against bigotry and hate. Just over a decade later (in 2009), the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act—a federal law against bias crimes directed at le***an, gay, bisexual, or transgender people—was passed.

The life and death of Matthew Shepard changed the way we talk about, and deal with, anti-LGBTQ+ hate in the United States. Since his death, Matt’s legacy has challenged and inspired millions of individuals to replace hate with understanding, compassion, and acceptance.

Today we remember Matthew Shepard, and share gratitude for our friends at Matthew Shepard Foundation, who continue to do such critical work in his honor.

Matthew, you are gone but never forgotten. 🕯🌈
