Join the Center for Applied Linguistics for a timely lecture presented by our 2026 Ferguson Award recipient. Deborah K. Palmer, Ph.D, Professor of Equity, Bilingualism and Biliteracy in the School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Palmer is also affiliate faculty in the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education, the Department of Ethnic Studies, and the Culture, Language and Social Practice (CLASP) Program. Dr. Palmer embodies Charles A. Ferguson’s commitment to scholarship and to thinking globally about the importance of language policies and language teaching and learning.

Drawing on metaphors and real examples from her own and others’ action research in bi/multilingual education, she will begin by framing the present moment – touching on the political, the ideological, the organizational, and the pedagogical – and then propose a set of key strategies to keep our communities and ourselves engaged in powerful, forward-oriented work even as we find ourselves in a state of continuous defense, reaction and outrage. The House of Representatives approved its FY27 State Department appropriations this week. In a win for language advocates, an amendment proposed by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) to wipe funding from the bill was defeated by a bipartisan coalition of 348-70. JNCL-NCLIS and our allies at the Alliance for International Exchange helped whip up opposition. Funding for the program was set to $287.8M in the bill, an almost complete restoration from the FY26 cuts.

The legislation also supports other critical language programs, including the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the Critical Language Scholarship Program, the National Security Language Initiative, and the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. Some details on funding levels for these programs were provided, but not all. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sustained a $20 million cut relative to FY26. The Senate has not yet released or considered its FY27 State Department appropriations.

Have you ever used AI in your language classroom? Whether you use it, totally avoid it, or are still figuring it out, we want to hear from you!

My name is Nicholas Mueller, an English language teacher and PhD student at the University of Illinois. My team is running a survey on how language educators use AI in their classrooms. We're not doing this study because we love AI, rather, we want to support in-service language educators by developing responsible, pedagogically sound ways AI could be used in the language classroom.

Hearing directly from language educators is incredibly important to us, especially those teaching Less Commonly Taught Languages. Given your extensive engagement with Russian-speaking communities, we feel there is no one better to help us reach Russian language educators. Would you be willing to share our survey with any educators in your network?

The survey takes about 15 minutes, and participants may volunteer for a follow-up focus group (compensation is available!).
