This is Jonathan: a father, pastoralist, and beekeeper in Kenya. 🍯

His 50 hives — a mixture of traditional hand-carved logs and 2 modern units — represent a significant opportunity for growth. But despite his hard work, Jonathan faces many of the challenges common to remote beekeepers, including limited market access and middlemen who drive prices down.

Right now, he sells honey by the bucket, which means that he misses out on extra income from processing honey byproducts.

Through hands-on training, Nuru Kenya is helping beekeepers like Jonathan transition from subsistence beekeeping to a profitable agribusiness that can provide sustainable income for his family.

🔸 How do we capture shifts in women’s agency, community trust, household stability, or a farmer’s confidence in the future?

To explore these questions, Nuru partnered with members of Georgetown University’s Global Human Development Class of 2026 from October 2025 to April 2026 to examine whether Social Return on Investment (SROI) could help better measure and communicate the broader value created through Nuru’s work.

Farmers and pastoralists in Baringo County, Kenya are increasing their yields and incomes, thanks to training provided last year by Nuru Kenya.

The group learned:
🍯 how to make more items with honey by-products
🍯 how to ensure that all necessary certifications were in place to package, sell, and market honey and its by-products

Building on the success of last year's participants, Nuru Kenya will train two new cohorts of beekeepers on modern beekeeping and biodiversity management.

Through this project, more beekeepers conserve their ecosystems, support sustainable honey production, and build sustainable livelihoods that benefit their families.
