Over the past year, Nuru Kenya has supported more than 300 beekeepers in Baringo County to strengthen their livelihoods through beekeeping.

The results speak for themselves:
🍯 31% increase in honey yields
💰 25% increase in income
🐝 74% increase in hives per beekeeper

As beekeepers invest in growing their enterprises, they are building more resilient households, stronger cooperatives, and new opportunities for their communities.

This year, Nuru Kenya plans to expand its support to an additional 900 beekeepers, helping more families turn beekeeping into a pathway toward lasting prosperity.

📈 Progress accelerates when local leaders come together.

In March, Nuru Burkina Faso brought together cooperative agribusiness leaders along with municipal and customary authorities from the South Central and Central Plateau Regions. The first event of its kind facilitated by Nuru Burkina Faso, this meeting explored avenues for capitalizing on recent successes in the agricultural sector, while also facilitating discussion among cooperatives and local officials to collectively work together to address challenges.

By strengthening coordination between cooperatives and local leadership, communities are better equipped to build resilient agribusinesses, unlock market opportunities, and drive sustainable growth.

For many rural households, resilience starts with diversification.

When families have multiple sources of income, they are better equipped to withstand droughts, market fluctuations, and other unexpected shocks.

That's why Nuru Kenya is expanding opportunities in beekeeping for both farmers and pastoralists. 🐝

Beekeeping requires relatively little land, complements other livelihood activities, and creates opportunities to generate income from a range of products — from honey to beeswax.

Combined with training and cooperative support, it can become a powerful pathway toward greater economic stability.

This is Jonathan: a father, pastoralist, and beekeeper in Kenya. 🍯

His 50 hives — a mixture of traditional hand-carved logs and 2 modern units — represent a significant opportunity for growth. But despite his hard work, Jonathan faces many of the challenges common to remote beekeepers, including limited market access and middlemen who drive prices down.

Right now, he sells honey by the bucket, which means that he misses out on extra income from processing honey byproducts.

Through hands-on training, Nuru Kenya is helping beekeepers like Jonathan transition from subsistence beekeeping to a profitable agribusiness that can provide sustainable income for his family.

🔸 How do we measure impact beyond yields and income?

🔸 How do we capture shifts in women’s agency, community trust, household stability, or a farmer’s confidence in the future?

To explore these questions, Nuru partnered with members of Georgetown University’s Global Human Development Class of 2026 from October 2025 to April 2026 to examine whether Social Return on Investment (SROI) could help better measure and communicate the broader value created through Nuru’s work.
