The Marine Technology Society was incorporated in June 1963 to give members of academia, government and industry a common forum for the exchange of information and ideas. Our guiding purpose is:

Just Announced - Ocean Business Comes to the US!

The Marine Technology Society (MTS) is thrilled to announce a major new chapter for the U.S. ocean technology community: Ocean Business USA, coming to Newport, Rhode Island, September 28–30, 2027.

MTS will partner with Ocean Business and Diversified Communications to bring one of the world’s leading hands-on ocean science and technology events to North America for the first time. This inaugural U.S. event will take place at Safe Harbor New England Boatworks and is expected to welcome more than 1,500 ocean technology professionals, 100+ exhibitors, and 75+ live demonstrations.

New Legislation Would Modernize NOAA Fisheries Science with eDNA

U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) have introduced the Fisheries Science Modernization Act, legislation that would expand NOAA’s use of environmental DNA (eDNA) and other biomolecular tools in fisheries science. The bill would complement traditional stock assessments, helping NOAA expand survey coverage, improve data collection, and assess fisheries more cost-effectively, including in remote or challenging environments.

If passed and signed into law, the Fisheries Science Modernization Act would establish national standards for eDNA monitoring, create a NOAA eDNA Fishery Stock Assessment Pilot Program, expand workforce and laboratory capacity, and strengthen collaboration among federal agencies, fishermen, Tribal Nations, academia, and industry. It also aims to support U.S. innovation in emerging technologies, including autonomous and AI-enabled sampling systems.

This momentum comes at an important time for the eDNA community. The Marine Technology Society’s 2026 Global eDNA Conference, taking place October 28–30 in Seattle, will bring together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and practitioners from around the world to advance eDNA science and its applications. With sessions spanning technology development, data science, conservation, policy, standardization, and implementation, the conference offers an opportunity to explore how eDNA can help shape the future of ocean and environmental monitoring.

🌟 Meet Judith Elliot-Adjoh, Recipient of the 2026 Paros-Digiquartz Scholarship! 🌟

Judith Elliot-Adjoh is a Master of Science student in Ocean Engineering at the University of New Hampshire and a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center, a UNH and NOAA partnership. Her research develops methods to classify seafloor sediments from calibrated echosounder data, validatedagainst physical sediment grab samples, and compared with multibeam backscatter. She holds a First-Class Honours degree in Surveying and Geoinformatics from the University of Lagos and is pursuing the IHO Category A Certificate in Hydrography. She aims to build a career in hydrographic surveying and ocean mapping research, and to widen access to the field for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

💫 Meet Edoardo Ivan (Edo) Sarda, one of the 2026 EMERGE Participants! 💫

Dr. Edoardo I. Sarda is an Associate Professor of Robotics Engineering at Lake Superior State University (LSSU), where he serves as Robotics Engineering Program Coordinator and leads research in autonomous robotic systems, with a particular emphasis on maritime robotics and industrial automation. Before joining academia, he worked as an industrial robotics engineer, bringing extensive industry experience into the classroom and research laboratory. Dr. Sarda has led the development and modernization of LSSU's Robotics Engineering curriculum, expanded interdisciplinary engineering programs, and directed numerous student research projects that have earned recognition at national and international competitions, including RoboBoat, RobotX, and the National Robotics Challenge.

The Marine Technology Society and the Society for Underwater Technology are thrilled to announce Dr. Jyotika Virmani as the recipient of the 2026 Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration! ✨🏆

As Executive Director of Schmidt Ocean Institute, Dr. Virmani has established one of the world’s most influential and technologically advanced platforms for ocean exploration. Under her leadership, the Institute has combined state-of-the-art marine technology, open-access science, real-time global communications, and international collaboration to expand access to deep-ocean exploration and dramatically advance humanity’s understanding of the ocean.

Under Dr. Virmani’s direction, Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessels and exploration systems have enabled scientists from around the world to undertake pioneering expeditions to some of the least explored regions of the planet. These expeditions have employed advanced remotely operated vehicles, high-resolution seafloor mapping systems, integrated sensor platforms, telepresence capabilities, sophisticated imaging technologies, autonomous systems, and biological sampling technologies. Together, these capabilities have supported exploration of abyssal plains, hydrothermal vent systems, submarine volcanoes, deep coral ecosystems, polar environments, and previously unmapped regions of the seafloor. Expeditions supported under Dr. Virmani’s leadership have resulted in the discovery of new marine species, previously unknown ecosystems, major seafloor geological features, and important insights into deep-ocean biodiversity, ocean circulation, biogeochemical processes, and climate-related ocean change.
